881Y Question...

I just scored on e-bay :D I happened to look right after a listing for an 881Y was listed. It had a VERY cheap buy it now, so I jumped on it.. It also came with an older Imperial Jack knife with yellow scales that looks to be in great condition. I wasn't real concerned about that one as much as the 881 though...

The 881Y is in great condition. No shrinkage or cracks in the scales, and blades appear to be full, but have a few very fine scratches. No rust or pitting anywhere, and according to the seller all blades are tight and have great snap.

Anyway, My knowledge of older Schrades is limited, and I didn't think I had much time to research before someone else would have grabbed them.

The knife is tang stamped:
Schrade
Walden
N.Y U.S.A

with 881Y on the back side. It has match strike pull on the clip blade.

My quick guess was that it is pre 73, but I wanted to find out if I was correct.
Also, I am assuming that it has carbon steel blades as there are no other tang stamps... I can't wait for it to get here

Thanks Mike

Definitely a pre 1973 881Y Mike. If it was a newer one, it would not have the pattern number on the pile side, and it would not have the match strike nail nick. You are correct on the steel too, 1095 carbon.

Hi Mike,
Schrade dropped the Walden from Schrade Walden in 1973.
So your knife is 1973 or older.

The 881Y pattern first appeared in the 1957 catalog and last appeared in the 1986 catalog.
With the Schrade Walden name yours could have been made from 1957 to early 1973.
A range of 16 years in dating a Schrade is pretty close when it comes to figuring the date a specific Schrade is made.
At that point most of the Open Stock knives were made with carbon steel unless it was one of the Razor Blade Stainless series or a special edition.
I don't know that the 881Y was ever made in stainless steel.

If you post some pics of your knife, and both tang stamps, perhaps we can date it a bit closer for you.

They were nice knives, I have a couple myself.

Great find!

:thumbup:GREAT score on that one;) I truley miss the match striker pull they add a very classy "OLD Maker" look!!!;)

I see thawk posted while I was writing mine.
That happens sometimes. :D

Good job! Yellow is good. Now you can get the other two tang stampings in that knife, plus a user. And then the three tang stampings for its mate, the other yellow four inch Schrade stockman, the 882, shadow or birds-eye. In three tang stampings. And a user.:D:)

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it.
Even though its not mint and doesn't have the tube, I haven't been this excited about getting a knife in quite awhile.

I will definitely post some pictures of her when she gets here.

Dale: Is this one a Schrade or a Camillus? Think it might be stainless. I think it is a 2004 Schrade but I'm not sure. Glad you posted the additional information.

I am 99.99% sure that that one was made by Camillus for Taylor Brands LLC.
Note the old type plastic tube that it comes in. That is typical of the Schrade-Waldens that Camillus made for Taylor. Also the stick-on UPC code; I think that comes from SMKW who were a big seller of those knives.

I hate to make absolute statements about Schrade without the knife in my hand, But I am 99.99% sure that Camillus made that knife.

I did not think the Camillus made contract used the old Schrade pattern numbers, but I'm not sure at all.

I have one of the first yellow handle knives made by Camillus after Schrade closed, it came in the clear tube with card insert which mentions that the knife was made by Camillus. The knife is a Trapper and the card insert was marked SWA296Y.

The knife you linked to above thawk is a bit of a mystery, I bought one back in the fall and cannot make my mind up as to who made the knife, the knife I bought ws via James Parker on e-bay, so I thought it maybe a Taylor brands offering, then seeing it had an 881 marked blade put the origin back in question. There could be various options as to who made the knife, anywhere between Schrade/Camillus/Taylor brands, the strange part to me is why the 881? 8OT would of been the latter model to use as the 881 has not been made for some time, unleess for this project Schrade itself had a box of 881's to experiment with for the 100th Anniversary knife designs.

Here it is. Its not mint, but thats o.k because she is going to be a user...
Blades are smooth with great snap, and no wiggle when open.
It doesn't even have any spotting on the top of the springs inside.

She's a beauty for sure. Nice yellow for sure. I'll bet you enjoy that knife for a few years.

Thanks.
I do like the yellow on the older Schardes, much better than the yellow on the Case knives. Although the older Case yellow knives were more like the Schrade coloring. Not sure why they changed it

Looks like you made out like a bandit, Mike congratulations.
For comparisons I can share some later 881Y pics.
Came in a Whittler's Club Set, barcode on outer box 44356 02164
with WC80TY below barcode. Warranty paper & whittlin' tips
booklet both show copyright 2002.

That is very cool wosey. I've never seen one of those sets. I really like the whittlin handbook

I'd never seen the Whittling Set with an 881Y before. Seems like there is one with a 34OT as well. Nice to get this one with the carbon steel, and not seen that shield either. Nice one Wosey. Where did ya find it?

A Case Collector Club member in NY had it
and I traded him a Case Kanife for the Whittlin' Kit.
Included in the box was a clipped out ad for
the whittlin' kit. Might not be the whole ad
since bottom edge cuts off a blade & text.
Backside has part of an avatar & sc6otx so
must be a knife catalog page of some type.
Whittlin' Kit text includes:
"A limited number of the clip blade forthis set were originally
stamped out in the 1970s. They were tang stamped SCHRADE
N.Y. U.S.A.-a tang that was retired shortly thereafter.
The blades have been warehoused since then. Now, we are
happy to bring you this Limited Edition piece. Only 1500 pieces
have been produced-there will be no more!
Features: Stainless steel blades with RARE Schrade,
N.Y. U.S.A. tang stamp
Yellow composition handles
Brass pins and liners
Antique brass shield
Nickel silver bolsters
3 7/8" closed
Whittlin' guide explainssome of the "tricks of the trade"
Handsome full color tin
Even includes a block of wood! "

Not sure all the info is correct since claims stainless steel blades
but tang has no + after Schrade.
