Picked up this 885UH this week. Dose anyone know if it is one of the earliest Uncle Henry 885UH's manufactured by Schrade?
Thanks, Keith

From my research into the catalogs I find these models in the first 4 years of the history of the Uncle Henry line:

897UH - 1967
285UH - 1968
127Uh - 1968 & 1969 - Reintroduced in 1972
165UH - 1969 & 1970 - Reintroduced in 1994
227UH - 1970
885UH - 1970

hang in there -- they will show up, grabbed this sw 885 a few years ago. the tang is stamped;
schrade
walden
n.y. usa
stainless
a 4 line stamping with the backside having gimped liners. i dont know if all the sw's had liner gimping or not? the backside of the main blade is only stamped with "885". it does not have a uh designation anywhere but on the sheild. the spey and the sheepfoot both have "stainless" on them.---brady

I have one with the milled liners, and stamped exactly like yours there Keith with the extra long pull, serial #72324. The secondary blades are stamped STAINLESS on the pile side. I have four of the 897UH Schrade Walden stockman knives, and all of them have milled liners.

Also Keith, I would judge your 885UH here to be a "soon after 1973" vintage. Here is a recent thread with similar information.

Did they ever produce an Uncle Henry 885UH with Carbon Steel blades? I seem to remember seeing a 896UH like this.

I do not think I've seen an 885UH in carbon 1095, Keith. Only the 285UH had the non-stainless carbon steel, during this time frame. I am not 100% sure of the steel descriptions (or the steel type) at all either.

Note on the little brochure, the descriptions vary, with the 885UH stating high carbon stainless, and the 285 high carbon tool steel.

Brady - I don't know. The serial numbers are the best indicators of age, if they exist. I'm not sure the jimping/milling has any dating significance. I know I really like it when they show up in the mail like that though. The thing about the Schrade Walden Uncle Henry's is that there is only about a 5 or 6 year time frame anyway, from the time they started making them, until they changed to SCHRADE NY USA stamps.

The milling on this 885UH, though are only on the outside liners, and very light compared to the 897UH Schrade Waldens I own.

yea your right, what a nice surprise to see one with milling. i suppose all the "king ranches" maybe had silver liners as opposed to the later "seniors" ? i dont think i have a senior model to look at.............brady
