888 Professional is a promising company from California who decided to produce small useful knives. A team of professionals and engineers teamed up to offer ideas about bringing to market quality and durable tool of small dimensions and low prices. While working on this idea creators have implemented some very interesting solutions. Tripleeight Professional was released to the market with some very innovative and very interesting solutions primarily designed for police, fire and rescue services, and outdoors enthusiasts. Some of these solutions are: WrightKnife, S.O.L., Kirkidashi, Talon, Rhino and SurvivIt Tool (formerly known as CopTool).
Thanks to 888 Professional I have the pleasure to review their SurvivIt Tool. This unique little tool was designed by Roy Huntington retired policeman with 24 years LEO experience, and 20 years as a writer and editor with knives in the American Handgunner Magazine.
Triple Eight Proffessional SurvivIt tool is made of heat treated AUS8 steel, while the handles and pocket clip are made out of 420 stainless steel. Dimensions of tool:
- Length closed 3 "(76.2 mm)
- Total length 4 ¼ "(107.95 mm)
- Blade length 1 ¼ "(31.75 mm)
- Weight 2 oz (56.7 g)
The main distinctive feature of this tool is its opening, which is patented and called T8P Action Spinner. The way the opening of the blades is extremely interesting, and actually fun. I spent almost all day playing with it. On the rear side of handle is spring-loaded ball that serves as a locking mechanism, opening you need to split scales in oposite direction so that both handles and blade rotate around the same axis, or around the axis where the blade is fastened. After this two strategically placed pins, one on each side of the handle "hang" in the designated area of the blade on the back and slide it behind. In this way, the knife opens and closes. Finally, when the handles are aligned in an open or closed spring assisted ball lies in its seat and click tells you that everything is in place and ready. All this might seem a bit complicated, but it is very easy and pleasant to use and fast, it can all be done even with one hand.
Blade of the tool itself is a bit strange, but with well thought form. Extremely flattened blade tip, followed by a right angle to the edge is something that you do not see everyday. Every part of this tool is designed well and fully serves the purpose. Flat front section of the blade is sharp and can serve as a lever or a scraper, a part perpendicular to the blade tip is great for fine precision tasks, and next is part of the serrated blade for hard cutting, and finally on the spine is what is called "Seatbelt cutter" or countersunk and edgy part that is used for cutting seat belts in vehicles to free those who are suffering, cutting rope or parachute cord, as well as for other purposes. On the back of the handle there are some jimpings which serves as a cradle for the thumb that he would not have slipped, and scales are also profiled in part to provide a better grip. The overall impression spoils relatively little lock in the open position (weak ball lock) which when receives a substantial grip can sometimes lead to split scales, this is the main downside to the 888 Proffessional SurvivIt Tool (Tool Cop).
In addition to the tool 888 Proffessional has a number of different blade shapes for different purposes. What distinguishes them from the competition is the durability of these knives and manufacturer compares them with fixed blades, which is achieved exactly with this unique design.
The tool is extremely harmonious dimensions and thickness, as well as negligible weight, so it makes it a strong candidate for regular pocket carry, or carry on keyring, and even as a moneyclip, and in this manner will be accessible at all times and situation. This is definitely a tool that you will not use on a daily basis, but if you ever find yourself in a situation for which this small knife is designed and provided you will be grateful that you have it in your EDC.
