hello,

pretty much sold on an 889 (CB) for a hard use beater knife. i usually carry a Dalton auto, and while it's well built, i've hesitated to use on occasion for fear of "hurting" an expensive knife. i know, i'm a wuss.

been using the search, and the only issue that came up was bad lockup on earlier models.

did the adjustable pivot pretty much do away with those, or is it still a problem?

thanks for any help.

i've owned mainly slipjoints from Buck in the past. growing up, 'carrying a knife' meant you had a Buck stockman with you..... :)

As far as I know what you are talking about has been resolved. The liner was beefed up and they lock up like a tank now, the only down side is that they are a little harder to close, other than that it is a very good user and will hold up a long time.

I wonder how widespread the lockup problem was? I think the few 889's that had poor lockup got a lot of bad publicity here in the forums.

yep, "the sky is falling" is common on boards.

thanks for the feedback.

At one point I tried to go back and document the number of actual 889's with an issue here on the forums (had some free time ). If I recall, I was able to find 3 or 4 actual first hand accounts and a lot of second and third hand accounts or the same person a number of times.

so, when did the liner get thicker?

i talked to Newgraham, and they're stocking 889's w/ Dec '06 on the box.

The liner was thickened from .040 to .050 in 2004 ish don't know the exact date, but that is the word I am getting from around the shop.
