Yay my first post:) sorry been lurking a few months now, I always have to read through the search for awhile.

I just got a buck/strider 889, I have mixed feelings about it though. I am replacing a SOG flash II black tanto. The reason I'm switching EDC is because the SOG has failed to open for me 4 times now, seems like any little peice of sand or pocket lint will keep it for opening.

The buck I just got in the mail kinda seems like poor craftsmanship, I'm very dispointed because I was lookin forward to this knife. After spending 65bucks;) I figure I would get something that would at least be able to flick open with my thumb like I always do on every other knife with a thumb stud. The liner lock is VERY hard to disingage:grumpy: and I cant even take to plastic handles off with out cutting into the RIVETS:barf:

I sent a very nice and well though out letter to buck about some of the problems with it, I hope to here back from them. It is a good thought of a knife but not put together well.

RANT off!!! Thanks for listening

I am now trying to decide if I should sell both and buy a real strider or coldsteel.:D

Gee Kungfumo,,,, sorry that your first post to the Buck Forum has to be such a downer for you. Maybe I can throw out some thoughts.

First,,,Buck knives have the best warranty around. It it has a problem Buck will fix it. Which leads me to ask...Why are you trying to take the handles off? Go to the Buck website and read about this knife... www.buckknives.com type in the model number where it says search.

Describe what you are calling poor craftsmanship... I have two laying here, a tan, and a black. Both are new in the box, never used other than flicking them open a few times just now.

The Craftsmanship on both is excellent. The cuts, checkering, blade alignment are all perfect. If you are talking about the black blade and what looks distortion in coloration, thats just how those are. If it is bothersome you might try a light coat of oil. But remember, this is a tactical knife, so isn't suppose to be pretty.

As for one hand opening, I can easily get the blade started using the thumb stud and then flick it open with a flip of the wrist. I can not take the blade to full open using the thumb stud. However, there is a hole next to it that fits me perfect to thumb it to full open lock using it.

Now, your knife sounds brand new and these knoves will loosen up some with a little use. So it should soon get easier to open. To disengage the liner lock, I use more of my thumbnail than the pad of my thumb. It's just a matter of getting use to it.

Again, you may want to go to the Buck website and read about and then look up the handle material. Call it plastic if you wish, as it isn't G10. But short of beating it up with a hammer, I doubt you would be able to destroy it in heavy every day use. Again, I wonder why you want to take the handles off.

I guess it is a matter of expectations. Yours may have been thinking you would get something that you didn't get.

and like anything that gets talked about here, we have this thing for pics. If you have some of what you call poor craftsmanship, please post them. We are always interested to see if something did slip through quality control.

As a last resort, send it back and get your money back. And, you say it is not put together well.... Please expand on that. Is it mis-aligned or something, loose blade,.,,,, ???

Like I said, I am looking at two model 889 here in front of me, and I just can't figure out what you are talking about..

Let us know more....
Thanks
LarryH

I also used a 889 and an 882. I thought they were excellent knives for the money! They was a little tension to open them but nothing serious, I dont want a knife that falls open either... If you want a fast opening knife that you can "flick open" Kungfumo maybe you should have looked into a Buck Sirus, tempest or Rush. Not a "built like a tank Strider/Buck tactical?
Those "plastic" handles I didnt care for because they were like sandpaper on my pants pockets still an awesome knife

pacrat:

Sorry if I came accrost as a little harsh on buck, I do like the knifes that they produce my first knife was a 110 and I still have it 15 years later.

In the last few years I have realised that buying a $15 knife wont cut it(yes pun intended:) So when I buy a knife that costs 60-70 dollars I tend to expect alot. Last night I took my dremel tool and polished the liner lock which was very sharp on the edge, and the back of the blade were it engages. This has made the lock much more bearable. The letter that I sent to buck was not geared toward being a dick or anything I just wanted them to know what I saw as being able to improve.

I wasnt dogging the handles, I like them, I would just like to be able to remove them to clean every thing. not a huge issue.

All in all the knife is not horrible, I went out and beat the crap out of it yesterday and had no problems with it not working, and it holds a nice edge.
have a good one.:D

Ok,,, Cool,,, I guess I was just curious if there really was anything wrong with the knife or it was a personal preference thang....

lots of guys here make preference mods to their knives.

Hey Jeff...
Below is a link where some of us in this watering hole yakked about the Buck Strider FB fairly recently.

Like I'm not a leg man, but a b..b man, I'm not a Fixed Blade dude as much as I am a folder guy when it comes to Bucks. And when it comes to it, I'm a small time 110 collector. Though a small collection, it's what I like...the 110.
I got the 890 cause I thought the collaboration may be over soon, so what the heck, I got one.

My Strider 890, I really do like the knife, but it just is not "practical" for EDC. Like wearing one of those 70's era brick cell phones on your belt. Heavy as hell. I'm guessing that with the sheath it weighs more than a pound.

The cool thing about the Strider is that you have the confidence in knowing there isn't anything gonna break it. Heft and Bos treatment with the handle made outta something that could probably be space shuttle tiles (G-10? Whatever that means).

Think I posted previously that it's like a cockroach in that it seems it could withstand a nuke. If given just one knife to have for the rest of my life for all things, it would be the Strider. Maybe that's a stretch, but, for today, that's what I think.

Since the Strider 890 I obtained a NightHawk 650. That is a more 'practical" knife for an EDC FB. I wish I had the Tanto version of it though (my Strider is Tanto). Plus, I don't think the 650 is Bos heat treated. Maybe wrong (it's in my saddlebag right now and I'm too lazy to get off my butt and check the stamping...if I get in the garage the Mrs will lock me in there as I have been telling her I would organize the place today).

The grip position of the soft plastic/nylon NightHawk is more naturally comfortable than the squared off G-10 of the Buck Strider so it feels better in the hand. More like a knife than a tire iron with a handle (Strider).

I bought a 102BR Woodsman some time ago to try as an EDC FB. Too small. Was thinking of getting a 119 but haven't yet. Thinking that the 650 will be just fine. You get less stares wearing a 650 than when ya wear the 890 at church socials and it fits in the pickle jar better (the NightHawk).

So, bottom line...I love that Strider and unlike my little Woodsman that I have never used, don't regret getting it at all. You don't get a Humvee expecting to be able to park in the "compact car only" spot...so don't get a 890 thinking you'll "John Wayne" wear it everyday, though I did for two full weeks on a road trip.

Your Mileage May Vary.

Say "Hi" to Radar and Trapper John for me ;)

To Goose,
Thanks for your very helpful reply.I did look at the 890 last week
and to me it looked like a lot of knife to wear. But it does make a statement
and sometimes thats no a bad thing.I got a 110 last Christmass and I wear it alot, and use it at work .I see what you mean about the handle on the 650.
There are a lot of people on this sight that have and like it.So maby I can get one of each, just not at the same time.
Ride safe.
Jeff
