I picked up an 897 UH the other day. It says "Schrade Walden N.Y. U.S.A. Stainless" and has the serial number 68784 on the inside liner. I was hoping someone could tell me about when this knife was made. Or any suggestions on where to do some digging.

It was made before 1973 since its a Schrade Walden. First made in 1967 or 1968 I believe but not certain. You can search right here in this forum and find more information. Probably some serial number threads in here somewhere.

I have an 897UH and an 885UH, and believe they were made about 1970 -73.
You do not see them about, for sale too often. I have only seen two 885UHs, in many years. Ken.

From what I can find, it looks like the 897 UH began production in 1967. They put serial numbers on them the owner could register and get a free one if they lost the original within a year of purchase. serial numbers were discontinued after 1979, They went up to 999,999 and started over with A1, etc. Not sure how many they sold in the first couple years of production, but I'd guess a knife with a number before 100,000 would have been in the first couple of years.

Yes it was 1967 n8amis. I'm not knowledgeable about the production numbers. Here is the 1967 Catalog. They added the 227UH in 1968, the 285UH in 1969, and the 885UH in 1970.

Ken, have you ever looked at the Schrade Collectors site? It is helpful for dating the Schrades.

I do not believe Schrade numbered there knifes up to 1979. I have quite a number of knives without serial numbers from 1956 to 79.
As I said above, I date my two (NIB with all paperwork) Walden knives at 1970 to 73.
thawk, I look at that site, quite often...I also have my own Schrade price lists etc., back to the 1930's. Ken.

Those Schrade Walden 885UH knives don't come around nearly as often as the 897UH or the 285UH. For the Schrade Waldens, you always want to look for that hinged box. And all three of the pocket knives often had the pretty milled liners too. Some of the 885UH have stainless steel liners.

Thanks for all the help, fellas. I'm not a Schrade collector, but who knows. There's something about holding a knife in your hands from a different time that feels pretty darn good. Got to start somewhere.

There are 3 Schrade 897UHs and 1 Schrade 885UHs for sale on "Buy at AAPN". The 897UHs are priced at $30 to $50, NIB. Ken
