8CR13MOV vs. Aus 8? Thoughts, opinions...

OK I am wondering which of these two steels holds an edge longer?

What are some of the pros and cons of each steel?

I know they are budget steels, and there is nothing really
glamorous about them, but I thought I would ask.

Thanks,
John

I've had a cold steel voyager (1st generation) which was aus8 and I have spyderco tenacious and persistence which are 8cr13mov and to me they're both not bad for budget steels but the 8cr13mov seems to take a finer edge and holds a little longer, however I used to beat the hell out of that voyager I had and it never chipped, micro chipped or rolled on me. So both are pretty decent and similar when talking low cost steels. Just my opinion.

As I understand it 8cr13mov is the Chinese equivalent of Japanese aus8. And with the world famous Chinese QC, Some will be fine, some will suck.

I like 8cr13mov better.
You really have to put a toothy edge on AUS8 for it to cut well in my opinion....

8cr13mov has been harder from my experience and will take a finer edge because of it.

Really the only reason I like 8cr13mov better is because its harder..

8Cr13Mov is the only blade steel that I can honestly say that I hate. Every knife that I've got or had with that steel rusted with hardly any moisture. Aus-8 is acceptable to me, but the thin edge on my Mini AK-47 makes the steel hard to keep sharp.

Unless you have a preference due to the source country, I'd say the main differences between the two reflect the quality of the heat treating done by the knife manufacturer.

Yeah, CS tends to heat tread toward the softer side for "toughness". It gets annoying having to strop your knife every time you use it. If they brought the Rockwell up a few points they would take a finer edge and still be plenty tough.

Not a CS hater, I own many of their products. Just speaking from experience. Though the leatherneck tanto I bought will probably be my last purchase from them ever.
