What are your thoughts on the flat verses the beveled disk that Rob Frink sells. I'm thinking about putting together a beefier disk set-up than I have and wondered about what the advantage of one over the other would be. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Depends on intended use, David. A beveled disc by nature is an ever-so-slight cone which means it doesn't grind "flat" but an almost undetectable hollow. It's benefits shine when you do something like grind bevels because longer blades cross the centerpoint off the disc. You can grind "almost flat" bevels on a 10" bowie blade, which would be tougher to do on a flat disc.

However, if you want to use it for mitering bolster/handle mates or getting things really flat, stick with the flat disc.

My .02. Others mileage will vary.

I'm with Fitzo--which is why I have both!

I use a beveled disc in the vertical position for grinding blades, and a flat disc in the horizontal position for flattening stuff.

Thanks fitzo :) Thanks John, do you have the complete outfits (base,VS unit + motors or did you buy just the disks and go from there ? Here's a link BigJohn, http://www.beaumontmetalworks.com/index.html ,the "works" or just the "disk", + all kinds of other tools to lighten the wallet on that site. I've been saving for about 4-5 months for the Rotary Platen which I plan on getting along with the disk. After that the "penny jar" will be devoted to a 14" wheel but that won't be for a while. Geez, it never seems to end does it ? There's always something that you "must have" to make things easier :) .

David,
I use the beveled disc a lot. I have a flat I use only seldom. Both my disc units are VS and home built.I use them horizontal.
You will like the rotary platen.

Thanks Stacy, I'm leaning in the direction of the beveled disk after reading the replies. Thanks for the help everyone  :)

edit to add : BigJohn, I just figured out what "NVM" means, I'm not up to speed on all of the "shortcuts" yet ;)
