hello all first post and i hope i dont make an ass out of myself but i need some help.

i have been looking for a classic style bowie knife. i would like it to be carbon steel, have a blade length of just about 9 inches with a plain wood handle. i would also like to it a drop point or a clip point blade. its weird im really looking for a very basic knife but i just cant seem to find the right one.

now this is where my main problem comes in i want this to be a hard use knife. now i know a lot of you will think im am nuts by saying this but i CANT see myself beating the hell out of even a 100 dollar knife(so let me set my price range at no higher then 120, but hopfully as low as possible with your help). but i also know you get what you pay for.

im hoping that you all can help me with my problem or at least tell my im crazy and i just need to pay up for a good knife.

thanks animal101

Go look at Bark River Knives. A bit more than what you might want to pay but every outdoorsman who I have ever talked to raves about them and loves them to death. Just go ask in Wilderness and Survival.

Animal check into the Cold Steel Laredo Bowie. I think they go for about what your wanting to spend.

Ranger RD9, Ontario RTAKII, or a Ontario SP5. I have the SP5 and the handle is hard but I have beat it to death. If you can still find it, it was only 50 bucks when I got it a few months ago. The sheath is fair but good enough. It batons and chops like mad. It has held up well. I also have a Kabar Heavy Bowie. The handle is bigger than the SP5 and still as hard but the blade came sharper than the SP5. The Kabar was one of the sharpest knives I have gotten from the factory. My RC5 was about the same. The other were all excellent but the Kabar was sharper than my A1, Bravo, Sog Seal Pup Elite (Gone), Sog Seal Teal Elite (Gone). The Kabar is cheap also. I think the RD9 would be an upgrade. It is tough!!!!! And the RTAKII is nice but has a thinner blade 3/16 compared to 1/4 for the SP5, RD9 and the Kabar Heavy Bowie. A longer blade really makes chopping easier and really good at batonning. I pushed the batonning hard on both the Kabar and the SP5. My Kabar has a few nicks in it. I believe I grounded it a few times...I dont care. I am going to put a convex edge on it for fun. I bought it as a cheap beater. One I can practice chopping not worry about messing up as well as practice sharpening. It is my trainer blade.

Very simple and tough as nails. Around 75$-80$

thanks alot guys! well i defintly have some goods knifes to look through.

i and considering the 2 ka bars. the becker9 and the heavy bowie. the only problem is that i have heard of the beckers plastic handle coming lose after some hard use.

anyone have any experiance with this?

thanks for the help and if you have any more ideas keep em coming.

You can always buy aftermarket woods scales for your Becker BK9. They won't be cheap though.
The screws on the Becker will probably come loose unless you tighten them down with (blue) Loctite.

the handle scales on the beckers are removable. You can either make wood one yourself or buy third party scales. Although the later will probaly cost as much as the knife.

Condor knife and tool.

They are far from true bowies IMO, but with your limitations they are probably the best bang for the buck with the pattern very close and priced under what you set as a limit. limited Lifetime warranty :)

If you get the BK 9 which is better then the large Bowie IMHO, just pick up some Blue lock tight and put some on the handle bolts.

They will never come lose until you decide take them off with the hex wrench.

I got my BK9 in two weeks ago and it is one tough solid knife.
The balance on it is awesome for a 9 incher.

You wont be disappointed with it.
