For a while I have been contemplating building a disk sander for my shop using a 180v Dc motor for the build. My initial thoughts were for a 1/2 or 3/4hp motor, however I want to make sure that will be enough. I know it will be used to ensure grinds are flat on both small and large knives. I think that will probably be the toughest chore it does but hey you never know.
What do guys think?

I use a 3/4HP 180VDC motor on one, and a reversable 3/4HP 120VAC motor on the other.

i have a 1/2 hp 110 volt motor on mine and i can push hard and not slow down the motor much at all.

1/2hp is adequate however I can slow it down. I use a 1.5hp 3ph 3450rpm on a vfd for hogging. I also have a 1hp 3ph 1750 rpm for the finer finish work with a cork face.

I survived with the 1/2 hp 110 1750 rpm reversible motor for almost 10 years. The key word is SURVIVED. Once I went to a 1hp variable speed motor I wondered how I managed for all those years.

I guess I'm just slow . My disk is a 1/3h.p. , 1140 rpm . Have never slowed it down or stalled it out no matter how hard I push . Plus the slower speed is nice for control and heat build up .

Check out Rod Neilsen's new disc grinder attachment. It is the best thing since sliced bread. I have another one sitting in my shop waiting to get set up. I will have 2 variable speed disc grinders with 9 different discs to change for them. It save a ton of time and save lots of money on sandpaper.

Mine is set up with the disc horizontal and is powered by a 1HP variable speed reversible Baldor. I just can't figure out what a disc sander is for??? :o

Rob!

Thanks for the input fellows, I guess it will either be a 3/4 or 1hp motor for mine. I don't want to put the time and expense into building one that is not up to the job.
