Hey all, just wondering if anybody out here in the Phoenix Az area can help me out with a HT. I called Phoenix Heat Treat and they wanted $90 dollars for a HT...That just seems a little steep to me. I couldn't find any other place that would be able to be of service to me, would rather not ship it, but I will if I have to, anybody out there do HTs to order? Its a .28 thick 5160 chopper, would like to see it around 57-58 rc. Thanks

I would recommend sending it off to someone. I have no idea who, though darrin seems like a pretty upstanding guy. (seals was first to suggest him in this thread, and I would say he is right.)

Paul Bos charges around 20 BUCK(s) for one blade.

"Materials Heat Treated: All stainless steels, air hardening tool steels, and stainless steel Damascus."

But they only process air hardening steels, they won't do 5160

Peters Heat treat will do oil hardening steels, but their minimum charge is probably the same.

Your best bet is a maker here who will do it for you.

For something that big, you're talking a lot of resources and time. I think it might be a little bit steep, but it's not a complete rip-off.

I have a HT facility walking distance from my house. His minimum order depends on the metal. For instance he runs 440C every day and this he quoted me $7 for a 9 inch knife at RC 60-61.

Give them a call: http://valleymt.net/home

It is a BIG facility maybe 30-40,000 sq feet and they have HUGE vacuum kilns. Very cool place.

I think Peters charge eighteen per blade up to 4 and then flat up to twenty lbs.

Wow, thanks for all the replies guys, i have seen a few things about Darrin on the forums before...looks like my knife is going to Louisiana!!! Ive never been =( Thanks again for all the help!

It sounds like you'r'e talking about a setup charge. The local heat treaters in Austin charge a $50 setup charge, and then the heat treat is by pound.
Peter's, Paul Bos etc are much better set-up for knifemakers.
