903 steel

Morning folks, All 3 of my 903's have or have had light rusting on the tang next to the scales. It's hard to see in this pic but I have removed it from the others. I have never seen 420HC or 925M have a tendency to rust, especially unused but I have sure seen 440 do it. At a guess, are these 440C IYO. The rust isn't a complaint. More of a curiosity of someone who is shirking his duties this AM.

looks like it would rub off with an eraser...I can't tell from pic how deep it is? just surface? is it under the scales too?

The 400 series of stainless steel is heat treatable and not as corrosion resistant as the non heat treatable series 300 SS. It is also magnetic. I remember this from my days, (40 years or so), in the investment casting and machining business.
