I edc my PE 810 Contego now, size/weight doesn't bother me, but I am looking for something less "scary" for when I'm going out somewhere that a more discrete knife would be better.
I'm torn between these because they're so neck and neck on paper, aside from slightly larger BM, and ZT being assisted. Carbon Fiber, M4, Great warranty (with blade replacement). So can anyone sway one way or another, it's only a $26 difference. I've also considered the Spyderco options with a PM2 or a Mantra 2, but the BM customer service has been outstanding, and ZT seems to follow suit. Anything else in the sub $250 realm that fall in with the blade steel/presentation package?

I agree, but if something crazy happens and I snap the tip off a blade, I can replace a BM or ZT for a small percentage.

If you want something that is a bit stepped up in the looks and alloy dept, what about grabbing a lightly used Spyderco K2 in CPM 10V and send it out for some jigging and anodizing?

It will be the only one around like it, hold a killer working edge, and offer a size that you are used to (around the 810). While being fairly inert to foul weather and sweat.

Other than both knives having carbon fiber and M4 steel, they're different knives. The ZT is flat grind which makes it a good slicer. The sheepsfoot blade isn't as good at piercing, but makes for a good utility knife. The ZT blade is coated. The assist open may startle some folks.
Unlike you, I've not had good dealings with BM's warranty service. That has kept me from buying BM
The BM is a nice looking knife and the blade design is better for an all around knife. I don't of many offerings in M4 along the size of the two you listed.
Since you've had good results with BM's CS, either knife would be a good choice

The one aspect of why you are looking that stands out to me is something less "scary" as you put it and well for me the speed and thwack of of AO would put it out of the running for me so between those two based on that one criteria the BM is the only choice.

Spyderco K2 looks GREAT but if 810 contego is scary, K2 would make people call police immediatelly :p

If I had to buy with one of the two mentioned, I would take the 908.

Only because I already own (and love) the 770cfM4 and I want both!

That being said, I chose the 770 since it is a slimmer carry with great ergos. I de-assisted mine, and it works fine. Though some don't and they require the spring to function properly.

Yes the 770CF M4 is a KSF exclusive and its a great knife ... I would have preffered without the coating but it does make it a great looking knife and I only carry it on occasion so the coatings held up great so far.

I like the Benchmade in this case. I like the shape of the handle and the blade. The controlled opening would be quieter. And the axis lock is a treat to use. I have coated blades from both mfgrs. Neither shows a scratch yet.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the black DLC coating, so I blackwashed mine instead.

Sorry for the huge pic.

Agreed that looks great. I have considered doing that with mine also ... but so far it's just been carried more when it's a wedding or event I'm going to and want a bit nicer looking knife ... so it kind of gets switched between this ZT 770CF ... a Small Sebenza Insingo Micarta with Bucky Blue Lanyard ... and a Mcusta MC1 with Quince wood.

About my only three light use "gentleman" type knives.

BM does that replacement up to a point, but when they run out of stock then they are out and they can't do the replacement any more. That particular BM is one of my favorites, I would have tried to buy one except that I already have 3 of the very similar 913 Stryker. I like my Spyderco PM2 models in M4 but I am careful not to do anything that would break the tip. I have other knives for that.
If you are concerned about a knive looking scary, I think the 908 is a bit too big for that. I think you would need to be more in the 3" to 3.25" range.

908 in m4 is a great knife. 908 was one of benchmades best knives. love mine.

not sure how either of those choice would be less "scary" as you put it than a contego? the 908 is what about half an inch shoter blade. also not sure whats scary about any folder or blade...except for maybe the person who holds it.
