Jeff,

What with the thread about the old custom shop and the bowies they created, I thought I'd post a thread about a big Buck bowie I just came across. It is model #909 with a 2 digit serial number. The thing is massive with double curved blade that must be at least 10 inches long and 2.5 inches wide! The local sporting goods store has a $540 price tag on it too including a display case. Didn't see any sheath nor inquire but it wouldn't surprise me if they had it stowed away under the display case.

Are there pix of these limited edition knives from the old custom shop?

Maybe someone is interested in this one. The store is Scheels at the Rushmore Mall in Rapid City, SD. If a phone number is needed let me know.

a Little on the 909.

I'll try to find some pics I can scan...Looks like we made less than 150 of the 909 mountain bowies. They were made with every type of handle and at least 2 types of steel. Damascus and 425 (?) Prices did vary. Suggested list was $540, this was for a black fibron like wood handle and a satin finish blade. leather sheath.

Jeff,

I'll have to run by their store to get the S/N but if memory serves it was in the 60s. It definately wasn't damascus and had a fancy wood handle.

Since these (Bowies) aren't being made anymore just thought someone here might be interested.

The 909 is a great knife. It feels real good in hand. I have two of them, one with a mastodon ivory handle, the other with a green fibron handle. I wouldn't trade them for anything. I have never seen one with a damascus blade though. Any idea how many of them were made Jeff?

John,
bad news on the Damascus, on a closer check of the records by Joe, it looks like we didn't make any offical ones... So I guess you don't need to collects those

Jeff

Jeff,
Thanks for the info. I sure do like the idea of a 909 with a damascus blade though.

Oh me, oh my, that's a good lookin' knife!

What year(s) were they made?

I finally remembered to check the serial number. The Model 909 is marked S/N 054 and the label info indicates only 117 were made.
Still there at Scheel's in the Rushmore Mall (Rapid City, SD) for $540 which, as Jeff has said, is the original MSRP.

Yeah... an actual Mall and fairly large considering. Betcha can't guess why it's call Rushmore <hehehehehehe>.

Well the bikes are here in force and the Ralley doesn't start until the 9th. Things are looking up

!

BTW I know Scheels will entertain offers.

Yeah, I know...

You have to remember, I lived there before the place got flushed by Rapid Creek. I think that happened around 1970, (it was during my second or third trip to RVN.)

I suppose a lot has changed since then.

BTW why DO they call it Rushmore? Other than the obvious, I mean.

What's Scheel's phone #?

Dennis,

I'd forgotten you lived up here way back when. Nasty business that flood... far too many folks died needlessly. I'm still shocked when the talk of that 3 digit number around here.

As for the Mall, I think it's just the obvious that spawned the name. They're not all that creative around here

!

Scheels is 605-342-9033. If you want to wheel and deal speak only to the knife dept. manager.

Bob,

Thanks for the number. If this upcoming show (San Francisco) is good enough I just might call them. That knife would look real good next to the old, micarta handled Kalinga and Akouna, as well as the old Nemos. I could have a regular collection getting started here.

Yeah, the flood shocked us all. My sister was living there at the time and we didn't hear from her for quite a few days afterward. My mother was frantic. I was overseas and heard about it on A-FARTS.

My dad was a bus driver and Rapid was his run. Luckily he was home in Mitchell when it happened, because the garage where the drivers stayed was near the creek. It was damaged, but no one was there at the time. My mother rode out with my dad and they found my sister living in some commune there and brought her home.

I knew some folks who lived down there and they always said there wasn't anything to worry about. They survived the flood but lost everything.

We had all seen the creek running full during the spring snowmelt and rains, but nobody figured the water would come down like that. Anyway, that was a long time ago.

Roger the creativity.

Thanks again.
