hi guys, I have never had an axis lock knife before, and recently acquired a 940-1, and was simply wondering if its normal to have a good amount of side to side play while closed ? as in, if I shake the knife side to side while it is closed I can hear/feel the blade knocking against the scales. Was simply wondering if I should be worried about it or not, thanks in advance!

It sounds severe, I'd send it in. I just got in a new 940, and it doesn't move around in the closed position. Not sure if the 940-1 has looser specs or what.

Sounds like the pivot bolt is loose is all. Side to side play can be caused by this. You need two Torx bits, T10 for the pivot and T-6 for the majority of handle and clip screws. It does not sound severe at all, just needs adjusting.

Most pivot based knives have a sweet spot; find it, set the tension to your liking and you're done. Sometimes a drop of BLUE Loc-Tite can help to keep the bolt at that sweet spot setting. The BLUE 242 formula allows the bond to be broken if necessary, DO NOT use the red version please. (Red sets much harder, and can prove to be a bear to break that same bond.)

If the blade has actually scored the liners, (from the shaking you've described) and you're concerned about that...as a warranty issue, it may require the knife to be mailed up to Benchmade. Their number is: 800-800-7427, and in case that's what they want you to do, here the link to the warranty repair form:

Good luck, and welcome to the Benchmade sub-forum.

@Draglid: You would not get better advice or diagnosis if you had called BM's CS. And they are of the best in the biz.

Welcome to the fold. (Fold,..get it?)

@Joe: You are a true gentleman, sir.

thanks ! il make sure to try and tinker with it in the morning, il post with results !

It sounds like you need to tighten the pivot but in my opinion (and I know I'll get flamed for saying this!) I felt like the 940-1 wasn't nearly as durable as I hoped. I've had two regular 940's so I thought I'd love the 940-1 since I'm a big CF fan but I really don't feel the 940-1 is as tough/strong as the original 940 with aluminum handles.

I think i'l probably get a 940 with aluminium handles for just this reason, I do love the look of the 940-1, but not sure I would want it to go through every day use.

tried adjusting the pivot to no avail, also in my fidgeting, I also realized the blade is quite off center when closed, not enough to scratch the scales, but pretty close. Any ideas on a fix ? And I don't know if I can use benchmades warranty service as I bought the knife second hand (albeit basically NIB).

If you decide to send the knife to Benchmade for servicing, do so. The 940-1 is not an inexpensive tool, and for it's price should be made letter perfect. Even though you're the second owner, don't hesitate. I've sent many from my collection up and have never in many years been refused. (...and none of them have ever been registered, so no worries there.)

No flaming, the T1 scales on standard 940 models are tougher/stronger than the CF limited's (IMO.) It's just that so many of us Osborne fans have been waiting for a regular catalog offering like this, (and most of us already own them's with green handles.) ;) It can't hurt to own a 940-1 though. They just look cool!

thanks for all the replies and help, really appreciate it ! I might give benchmade a call then... but that means time away from my 940-1 :(
