I recently picked up my first 940... the Knifeworks exclusive 940-1501 in black / blue layered G10 and CPM-20CV. Love the knife, but I have some concerns... feel free to tell me if I'm being hypercritical.

First, the blade is just not that sharp. Sure it cuts, but it doesn't "shave hair" like I see in all their demo vids and others' vids of Benchmades (as well as my own experience with my Barrage, which does shave). I don't mind sharpening it up myself, but that leads to my next, bigger concern. The bevels are not even and the edge is bowed from the base edge to the belly of the blade. Forgive me (and please correct me) if I'm using the wrong terminology, but the pics should demonstrate what I'm talking about.

Here you can see that on a flat surface, the blade does not lie flat as I believe it should?

Here shows the right side bevel, which is pretty good until near the base where it tapers down to a smaller bevel.

Another shot of the right side, can see uneven bevel here at the base (near the handle).

Left side where you can see belly-to-point bevel being larger / uneven with the rest of the edge.

So this is by far the most expensive knife I've ever bought and was expecting at least even bevels all the way so I could work it without having to re-profile. My Barrage has a nice even bevel all the way and most other Benchmades I've handled are much better or perfect even. I wouldn't care if it were a cheap / beater knife, but it's not.

Do I have valid reasoning for being concerned about this? What would be the preferred fix? I know I can send it in and they'll probably take care of it, but will they just re-grind the same blade or put a new one on?

Again, if I'm being over critical on it, let me know. I do love the knife and intend to use it as it should be used, but still think it didn't quite come as it should. Thoughts?

I remember the first time I received a Busse like that after many months wait. Disappointing feeling to wonder if you got a "good one." More so because there is no blade replacement option down the line with a fixed blade.

If the blade grind is bugging you, you should return it to KW and ask them to inspect the replacement before shipping. If you've already used it, send it to Benchmade for a fix. If it bugs you now, it will bug you later -and for me that means leaving a knife to sit on the shelf. No point in not being stoked on your folder, imo!

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

That's definitely a badly ground edge. If you send it to Benchmade they will replace it for free. My advice would be to just be very clear that you want a new blade in your request, otherwise they might try and resharpen the same blade for you.

The uneven bevels of two sides are not super rare. I did ask for an exchange in my case because of that reason. The non-straight edge is just wrong. I checked mine and the edge sits perfectly on a flat surface until the point where it begins to curve toward the tip. I'd definitely return for an exchange. Knifeworks folks will take care of it (although I guess you'll likely have to pay the return shipping fee).

I'd definitely exchange it or send it to be fixed. That, to me, is unacceptable. I have two 940s (different models) and neither is like that. Good luck and hopefully you get this straightened out fairly quickly. That has to be a real letdown opening the box and seeing that.

I think it's standard that bevels aren't mostly perfect. It's done by a human not by cnc. But that recurve is unacceptable thing.

Well that answers it! Thanks, Benchmade. Do you have specific instructions for me to return this or just fill out the form requesting blade replacement and send her in?

Your blade look exactly like the blade on my new 940-1. Must have been sharpened by the same person at the factory. I'm sending mine in pretty soon, I just wanted to enjoy it for a little while. I got it very sharp on the Sharpmaker in spite of the accidental recurve.

Call customer service and they will instruct you on how to send it in.

Is it more than just the warranty service form from your website? If not, I already have that filled out. :)

You can send it in that way but you may get a little faster turn around if you call customer service since this is a defect.

The same situation but knife is $400.

Benchmade maybe you should stop sharpening knives by hand?

Typical benchmade quality from the factory. Count yourself lucky that was the only issue.

In my earlier post I said my new 940-1 came with a slight re-curve. I just wanted to add that I did send it back to Benchmade and within a few weeks received the knife back with a new blade. Even grind, no recurve. I've carried it pretty much every day since then.

Like everyone else says.. get the blade replaced. I say this because I own the very same knife and it has been an amazing companion of mine. You have a kick ass Benchmade, trust me. And this is a good chance to have it engraved while your at it as well.... on a good note

This is why every Benchmade I own has met the Edge Pro for a full reprofile. I agree that this one is particularly bad, so hopefully you got it squared away with a new blade. While their QC can sometime leave a bit to be desired, having an employee active on the forums is invaluable and much appreciated.
