Looking for some guidance. Recently picked up the 940-1 and 940-2. Both from a reputable dealer. The color of the standoffs on the 940-2 seem off. From photos they always appeared to be a metallic green much like the blue standoffs on the 940-1. They appear more dull and muted and I am wondering if someone can confirm whether this is accurate or not. Everything else about the knife looks perfectly legit including the packaging. Its a 2018 dated production. The 940-1 is a 2022 date. 980 Turret is also a 2022. The 2022's came very well put together. The 940-2 is very stiff but it is centered with no blade play.

Appreciate all assistance.

My barrel spacers on my 940-2 do not look like that. They have a little shine to them. Box is dated 7/23/21

My dad and I both just bought a 9400 (automatic 940 Osborne) from a certified dealer and my dad’s anodized purple backspacer is much more purple than mine is. Mine looks like it’s been carried for years and faded.

I wrote Benchmade and they sent me a UPS label and told me to send it in and they’ll be happy to put a nice looking purple backspacer on so it looks correct. They even replied to my email in purple font that is a very close match to a 940’s backspacer lol. Gotta get a box and ship it out tomorrow.

Anyways I’ve been told Benchmade has variations in the anodizing and it’s all about how it took to the metal. Some parts slip through and aren’t prepped properly and the anodizing gets a little off looking.

I’d have preferred they just mail me out a new backspacer I could throw on in a couple mins, but I forgot Benchmade voids the warranty if you disassemble the knife…About that…….After buying an automatic Osborne 9400 and a Phaeton 4600dlc within 2 days of each other, and a mini bugout CF Elite 1 week before that, these will probably be my last Benchmade’s. I just cannot justify paying that much money to be treated like a child. I am an electronic technician for the post office and I disassemble and reassemble/repair etc multi million dollar machines with more intricacy than any knife. If I mess up, whole cities can go without their mail. I can handle popping a scale off of an automatic knife ffs…

It helps to read the warranty. Disassembling your knife does not void the warranty (heck, now they even say on their website that they'll warranty knives with aftermarket parts, they used to not do that). Improper dis/re-assembly voids the warranty. It's basically their way of saying if you take it apart and put it back together, it's fine, but if you break it, it's on you.

Their other longstanding policy is not sending out internal parts such as backspacers, springs, lock bars etc. That's in line with pretty much every company in the same price point as Benchmade.

That’s not true. I just sent my 9400 in after asking them to just send me the part. According to Benchmade as of March 2022, you are not allowed to touch AHYTHING on your knife except for the pocket clip.

No idea if it's different on the 9400 but the 940 backspacer is ano'd titanium. Skin oils can dull anodization color but cleaning, esp with a mild degreaser (Windex) will bring the color right back.

Did you try cleaning the backspacer at all before sending it in?

Paging Benchmade Benchmade what is the answer on this?

I'm noticing the moderator for this forum has been missing for some time.

I had it sent back to the retailer and they sent me out a 2022 dated 940-2. They checked their stock of older production vs. newer and found that there was a color difference. The 2022 I received is a proper metallic green as seen in most product photos of the 940-2.

Glad you got it resolved! Reinforces the importance of buying from dealers with good customer service
