I have difficulty deciding between the original 940 and the 940-1. Both are great knives since they have a large blade that disappears in your pocket. I am curious which knife the group would select?

I don't have the 940-1, so take that as it is. I however do have the -2 version as well as the green aluminum 940. I prefer the -2 as it is lighter and perfectly balanced, as well as slightly cheaper in cost. I wasn't going to get the regular 940 as I don't particularly like aluminum scales but the 943 convinced me to finally break down and buy one.

The -1 is $130 CAN more than the -2 so that was the main reason I didn't go for that (however since I wound up buying 2 940s and a 943 I guess that's rather moot). Blade steel is a minor concern for me and I really couldn't care less for s90v as s30v is more than up for the job, and I do prefer g10 over CF, especially at that price.
As usual YMMV.

Edit: should have added, that I have come to appreciate the aluminum scales on the 940 and find myself carrying it more than the -2, at least for now until another shiny Butterfly flutters across my path.

I had the ability to hold all three around Christmas time. I walked away with the -2 due to the price tag.

Although the s30v has been said to be a little more intensive to sharpen, I haven’t had any issue with it so I’d guess that the s90v wouldn’t be super terribly worse. I haven’t had the chance to attempt it yet.

All in all the -1 made me go full Owen Wilson in the store (wwwoooowwww!). Everything from the action, centering, and how the handle material felt in hand was phenomenal as well as I love the flow through designs over solid back spacers. I’d go with that one (no pun intended).

There are things I like and dislike about both models.

940: I prefer the backspaceres design of the 940. The aluminum handles are lightweight and strong and this knife has minimal steel liners which make it a great package. S30v isn’t my favourite steel but I have been able to get a good edge on this one so this s30v is pretty good imho.

940-1: Carbon fibre an excellent material for this design because it is essentially a linerless design. The c fibre is very ridgid and light so it is a great scale material. I don’t love s90v as a steel because I feel like I have to be super careful with it unless I ding the edge cause s90v is a nightmare to sharpen.

Both aluminum and carbon fibre are great materials for this knife design. You can’t really go wrong woth either.

I have the original 940, a 940-1, and a 940-2. I voted 940-1 due to the CF scales, and upgraded s90v steel. However, for the money, I think the 940-2 is the best value. The s30v is fine for me, and the G-10 scales are very durable, plus the difference in weight isn't very noticeable.

The -1 series offers nothing that I care about. I don't like carbon fiber as a scale material and I don't want to sharpen s90v. While s30v is a good steel (not my favorite) I'll take it any day over s90v. I do like the aluminum scales of the regular 940.

I gifted my 940 to a friend when I got the -1.
My own preference is for CF over ali, and I definitely like the much greater working edge retention of S90V.

If you have the funds, the 940-1 is the preferred option in my opinion. Given that to me, the point of the 940 is to pack a lot of blade into a slim and lightweight form, the 940-1 is the best example of that philosphy from the lineup. You also get the added bonus of S90V and the CF will wear much better than the aluminum handle scales will (unless you're into the worn look of aluminum). I had a standard 940 and got rid of it for the a dealer exclusive in red CF and M390 and I love it even more than my standard 940. I also did a blade swap on a 943BK into some G10 scales because I didn't want the aluminum to wear and break up the uniform look of the scale colour.

You really can't go wrong either way, but the 940-1 is where my preference would be amongst the two.

I love when I can see threads/questions I would’ve already asked :p! I have yet to own any variation of a 940 but, although the difference may be shuttle, the 940-1 felt so light compared to the others. They all felt nice in the hand but man oh man does that cf feel sweet. I am currently in the same position as you brother

+1 to all of this.

If you can afford the 940-1, definitely go for it. The carbon fiber feels nice to my hand and the S90V steel is a nice bonus too. It's one of my most carried knives.

That being said, I don't have the other versions of the 940, so I might be a bit biased. Either way, you can't go wrong with either, a 940 is a 940.
