950-1 or 551?

Between these two, what would be your choice for an outdoor folding knife? As a back up to a fixed blade. I'm sure many of you will say that there's no better back up to a fixed blade like another smaller fixed blade. But...

I had originally thought a Strider SNG - but have since changed my mind.

Which is your choice? Quite the weight difference between the two. 950-1 has a sturdier feel. The 551's plastic handles flexed for me when held very tight.

The 551 Grip does the trick for me. I would go with whatever is cheaper with two quality knives on the block. Unless you've been eyeballing and obsessing over the 950-1.

I have played with both quite a bit, and I definitely prefer the Griptilian over the other...

I did not find the Rift comfortable, even for casual use.

Also, if you go with a Grip, you might go with the Ritter Grip....

And Doug does a ton for the knife industry and the outdoor industry, he is the right guy to support.

I'm with Marion...of those two, get the 551; but, I would also consider the RSK series. I've joked about them being my "poor-man's" CR Sebenza, but in all seriousness, the blade profile is excellent and the design is a natural for outdoors use; they are also lighter than my Sebenza and get carried more often for backpacking trips. I've never had an issue with Grips or Ritter folders when it comes to being sturdy.

Another vote for the Ritter Grip. The Strider frame lock series have some of the toughest locks on the planet, but the edges are thick.

I'm savin' up for the 755. From the pix it looks like the frame lock on it will equal the Strider.

I will change it up and vote RIFT! I have medium-large hands and the handle fits me great.

I have a Rift and lots of Griptilian variants. I would go with the Grip. I find the Rift's handle a little awkward in use. The Grip is no-nonsense practical.
