950 Rift combo edge wasted space

Just got my 950SBK-1 Rift I ordered. Usually prefer plain edge, but had a mini grip in combo I liked and wanted to give the serrations a try on a larger blade.

I like the knife but there just seems to be a large amount of wasted space on the blade before the serrations start. I don't know if its normal, I posted a couple photos for comparison. What do you think? I may exchange for something else or a plain edge version just seems silly to give up a 1/4" of blade.

Plain edge no waste of space

That design does allow for a little more strength to the last serration at the end of the blade, but I'm not a fan or combo edges at all. To me, the whole serrated area is a waste of space.

I agree with Dale on this once again. I prefer to have either a fully serrated blade with the top having .50" plain edge or a regular plain edge. Combo blades do have a good purpose and that is general utility. Knives that see a lot of various materials needing cut throughout the day or specific job. Seems that is why they make so many of them. Most collectors seem to appreciate the PE versions. I had a 950 for about 3 months. The handle ergos didn't work out for me. Specifically the bottom horn created a hot spot that was not for me. I had to pass that knife onto someone that would appreciate it more than I did. The Contego, basically a larger version (similar blade style) is much better for me. The machining on the G10 has been tamed a bit from the earlier versions from what I've read.

Aesthetically, not a fan. They do have there place tho', Im in the trades and found their usefulness. I wouldnt call the serrations a waste of space, Id just like to see about half the amount they currently run. 1"-1.2". BM serrations are super aggressive, looks like so much material has been taken out, then you look at the blade from the co-pilot side, doesnt look like all that much. I've heard some say they dont like a particular manufacture's serrations, I think thats from more of a aesthetic stance then a functional. BM's serration work, again, would like to see about half the real estate used that they currently do. Love the way Chris Reeves serrations are done, retooling and patent infringements make that improbable for BM. Im ok w/ the serrations....I just dont like 'em.:D

Same as the two I had. Carried one and used one for a while and found the design worked very well for me in actual use. To each his own I know, but I happen to think the Rift one of BM's better knives. At least of their recent additions in the last few years. Got my first one I "Think" in 09. The Contego is my current favorite though mainly because of the larger blade but have to say I really like the reverse tanto design.

I hope after using it a bit it warms up to you. Like I said I found it to be an excellent knife.

I like the design of the Rift a alot, and I think the serrations will come in useful.

What bothered me was the 1/4"+ of bare unsharpened blade before the serrations even start. Seems to be normal on the Rift combo edge, some have a little more space than others. On the plain edge version the entire length of the blade has on edge on it.

Comparison sake. Always thought these serrations were a higher percentage then need be. Ive used this harder than it looks. Was glad to have them when I needed e'em.
