Went fishing with my youngest two boys this weekend. Brought all our poles, tackleboxes, bought bait, everything we needed. Except needlenose pliers...

I thought I had thrown my leatherman into my backpack, thought I had my tool pouch in the truck, thought I had pliers in my tacklebox. None of the above, and with kids and pan-fish, the fish are gonna swallow the hook from time to time.

Fortunatly, I had my 96-OT with me, Bearhead trapper with tweezers and pick. The tweezers worked fairly well for "swallowed hook syndrom". Pliers would have been better, but the tweezers worked pretty well, as they fit nicely into the fishes mouth. If they were a bit stiffer, and maybe were scored at the tips, they could have been even better than pliers, but hey, they got the job done! :D

This is a great knife overall anyway, and the accessories just make it very useful. Takes a seriously sharp edge, good backsprings, just a great package!

It's good to see that there is still some activity here on the Schrade Forum, though the last time Tim Faust has posted anything here was back in February.

That 96OT is a nice and handy little folder

In my opinion, Schrade produces some of the best traditional slipjoint folders for on the market. Their modern linerlock-type knives have been disappointing, but their slipjoints rock!

Rich,
Four-year-old caught the most fish, with a Shakespeare Scooby Doo pole! My 10-year-old was going for size, but the little guy just wanted to catch fish :D .

I do wish Tim would pop in from time to time, but maybe something has come up the past few months...

Nice to read a story about the 96OT! I have one and agree that it is a great product.I don't remember what I paid for it so it wasn't that much I'm sure.My only complaint with Schrades is that the blades tend to be difficult to open in comparison to a Case.:(

I have a 96-OT. Great knife. Mine has pretty good fit and opens nicely, no binding or looseness. I guess that the fit on these knives can vary somewhat.

I think that the 96-OT currently doesn't have the tweezers or the pick. The butt of the handle has a bolster similar to the bolster at the front of the handle, thus losing the tweezers and the pick. I have the old-style knife, with the tweezers and pick.

But, I don't use the tweezers or the pick. I rounded out the scales on my 96-OT to give the handle a better feel, both in my hand and in my pocket. Towards this end, I filled in the pockets in the scales, that the tweezers and pick slide into, with epoxy. Then, I filed down the delrin scales to give the handle a sort-of tapered shape, instead of the original squared-off edges that the knife comes with. I like it better this way.

The end.

Edit: I just went to Schrade site, and the 96-OT there has the tweezers and pick. I guess the 96-OT without tweezers and pick that I recently saw in a store was an older version. Oops.

You could have seen a 94-OT, which is a discontinued jr.-sized trapper, 3-7/8 inch long, (same size as the Uncle-Henry Pro-Trapper, 285UH I believe). Nice knife, wish they still made this one.

I have seen some other full sized trappers from Schrade, some with yellow handles, and some newer ones with wood or bone handles, with no pick or tweezers. Need to start adding to my collection!
