What's your opinion on the 96OT knife? For those who don't know what that is it is a schrade old timer bear head trapper with 4 inch blades and comes with the tweezers and field pick on the bottom. By the way the one I have is made in china, if I could have had the chance to get the american one at the price I got mine at believe me I would have, so go ahead post your opinions I would like to know what they are

Hey Jc, I've seen the knife in question before and boy, is it a cool pattern! I've never owned that specific model, but I have had other Taylor Schrades (Taylor being the parent company that poduces them overseas) And I can tell you that the steel is decent, comparable to my Chinese bucks, and the F&F is at least as good as my Rough Riders (...which are as good as some Cases, which leads to a whole nother discussion). All in all, cool knife, definitely one I'd like to try out some day. If you don't get the responses you're looking for, there's a ton of info and opinions on knives like this in the "Rough Rider and related slip-joints" thread. That's a good read. Hope this helps.

I would rather have the 97OT Buzzsaw Trapper with saw blade, but nothing wrong with the 96.
The original carbon 96s' can still be had for a decent price(or what I consider to be) & well worth the extra cost over the newer SS versions since they aren't made anymore & getting scarcer.

I collect the original USA Old Timers, so naturally I prefer those. :D
Is it worth paying extra for the originals? Of course. Is it worth paying a lot extra for the originals? Maybe not unless you're a collector.

I've got one of the originals. I like trappers and carbon steel, so it's a nice knife. The tweezers are very strong and of thicker stock than SAK or Leatherman tweezers of comparable size and I like them a lot. If you like the original Old Timers, I'd say get one. I don't really have an interest in the newer Taylor-made models.

That's the critter. That & a 15OT with a sheath that has the leather lacing are my current grails.

Wouldn't mind one of those early 15OT classics either. I have one, but with the newer style sheath.

Those 96OT / 97OT seem to be a bit uncommon, and they sell higher than the other trapper models.
Similarly, the 106OT (model with the scissors) have become practically rare.

It seems I mis-identified the trapper model in the pictures above. With 140 Old Timers in the collection, combined with my often-insufficient memory, there's bound to be an error now and again. ;)
The 97OT has the sawblade, the 96OT looks like this:
