My current work truck is a '94 F150 4x4 with 193,000 miles. It's nearly been beaten to death and has some maintenance issues.

There's a truck for sale in town, reasonably priced, newer than my current ride, and much fewer miles. It's a '97 F250 4x4 with a 460 engine, supercab, automatic transmission. Nearly perfect condition.

What sort of mileage could I expect to get from a truck like this? Can it possibly beat the 13mpg that my current truck gets?

I don't need a heavy suspension truck like an F250, but good used trucks are few and far between around here, and usually grossly overpriced. Hate to pass up the chance for a good deal on a nice one...

Wife talked to the owner's wife: Owner thinks it gets around 13, although he's never actually checked.

That sound reasonable?

my 91 chev 454 4x4 l/b e/c 4spd standard does about 6mpg
so i think you would have to be going downhill to get 13
even my 350's dont do 13

I don't think you be getting better gas mileage, especially if you put you foot in it.

Based on a '94 V8 F-150 I used to have, I believe you can get 16 MPG: 8 going and 8 coming back! Bill

The 460s always were gas hogs,I don't think you'll see 13mpg with it unless you drive on the level, don't haul much weight and keep your foot out of the acelerator.

The 460s are horrible. Think ~6-8mpg. Run, don't walk away!
About 8 city, 10 highway.

That's what my other online searching is turning up also. Thanks.

The unnecessarily heavy suspension and the likelihood of lower mileage are certainly strikes against. The fantastic condition and the asking price that's $3,000 below book value are checkmarks in the plus column.

Hmmm... I'll probably take a pass on this one.

Sincere thanks for the input.

At current gas prices and the average mileage, it won't take long to burn up the extra $3k you save.

If there isn't already and I would think there would be quite a few gas guzzlers on the market at really cheap prices. If you don't put a lot of miles on,it might not work out to bad, especially if gas prices start coming down after the election like I've heard predicted,it's a tough call.

SUVs, yes.

But a surplus of older 4WD pickups? No, not unless it's changed since I last searched. Around here they generally get driven until they fall apart, like mine.

No kidding. And I drive 1oo miles round trip to work, 2-4 times per week.

Never fear though, the hundreds of imaginary offshore rigs on stand-by will begin drilling tomorrow and gasoline prices will plummet. [snicker]

I have a 1996 F-250 4 wheel drive club cab pickup with 460 CID engine. It gets 10 - 11 mpg around town. Owned it since it was new.

That would be an awesome rig if you absolutely needed a heavy duty work truck or if you wanted it for a once in a while driver. But you will get 10mpg at the most with that beast. Probably less. My friend in highschool had one (we're going back 20 years + here so my memory might be bad) and I always thought it was cool, but I think he said he got 8 mpg with it.

I'd like to have one if my everyday driver was a little econobox!

I had a 2Wd F350 with that engine and it got about 8 mpg on average. Glad it was a company truck and I didn't need to pay for the gas.

Win

I forgot to mention that the axle ratio has an impact on gas mileage.

My 1996 F250 460 CID got better gas mileage than my 1992 F250 350 CID because the latter was geared lower for plowing.
