If you guys have seen my past post's on the
Emerson knives forum you would probbly think
that I love my '98 Commander.
Well, not anymore the Commander recently failed on me causing a deep cut into my finger.I was trying to cut into a box when the blade disengaged, folded under and hit my finger.
All this after a good friend of mine purchased a 2000 Commander that failed right
out of the box {sent back 2x}.
I sent Emerson an E-Mail regarding this about
a week ago and have not heard anything back.
My Emerson '98 Commander now sits on my shelf because I would rather have nothing at
all than something half-ass.Sorry if I sound a little harse think about how it feels to
have the blade of one of these "bite" into
your finger.

I am sorry to hear about this. I sent you an e-mail.

I hope your cut heals quickly.

I agree...get rid of it

Shadow - Yikes!

I'm a sucker for sympathy pain, and I feel your's as I type!

I know the feeling also of getting bit bad when it's the knife's fault. I usually just give it away. Can't stand to use it after that. Repaired or not.

Take care of that cut.....

Shadow 45:

That sucks! Sorry to hear it!

Sometimes rogue blades just don't treat their owners right. Hopefully you didn't dance around drunk some night with a full moon did ya?

The only person I know that can tame these wild blades is that Commander Lovin John Hollister. I suggest you send it to him as soon as possible to see if he can teach it some manners. If you beg he might even pay the postage to get it. It kind of sounded like he'd be willing to attempt to train it. I wouldn't let that damn thing share my house, I guarantee it! No tellin what it might decide to cut off next.

Take Care!

I'm not even going to comment about this. Shadow45, do yourself a favor and get a Sebenza. You can find a deal on one if you look hard enough and I've NEVER heard of one accidentally closing while in use. How much are your fingers worth? For the price of two lesser quality knives you can have the best. Please add your comment to my Commander lock failure list

Do a search of all the forums and just type in Sebenza. The only bitching you'll hear about it is the price. Take a look at this scan of my Large Sebenza taken apart:

This is a knife of the highest quality. Absolutely ZERO blade play. In fact, I would expect the blade to break in half before the lock would let go.

I have two Sebenzas. A small, which I carry everyday and the large. Also, with you living in Florida you should really carry a Microtech plunge lock auto. Zero lock failure on those as well and they are less expensive than the Sebenza. In fact, I would recommend a SOCOM Elite. You can get one for under $170 and this knife is so far superior to the Emerson that you will wig out. MT will be coming out with the Amphibian, which has a blade that is similar to the Commander, but the quality will be outstanding! (I'm plugging MT even though I'm pissed at them for taking way to long to return a CTII with a defect in the blade coating..........even so, the other 16 MTs I have rock!). See pic of my SOCOM Elite:

Your profile says you live in Jacksonville. Do you realize you can drive down to Sunbeam Road and pick up virtually any knife from the owner of this Forum.......Mike Turber @ 1 Stop Knife Shop. Now, it's not a show room so you need to know what you want. You'll think you died and went to knife heaven when you go to pick up your blade and see hundreds of knife boxes around! Plus, the dudes there are cool to talk to....knife nuts just like us.

Your not going to believe this but I met the
guy's from 1stop knife shop at a gun and knife show here a good friend of mine was showing them that 2000 Emerson Commander
that had the faulty liner lock and I was in the background making fun of him about how
he wished he had a real Emerson Commander
like my 98' ....guess that's what I get

Seems to be a few Emerson's listed. This situation doesn't make me happy, either. I don't want to see anyone who believes they have a "hard use" knife get a nice trip to the ER because of it. Just too many people complaining about these knives. Not a SINGLE one should have a defective liner.

Take your Emerson or any other liner lock you have and do the liner lock tests on them. Then, do my test:

Open the knife and wrap the blade in a heavy towel. Grasp the blade and handle and wrench the hell out of it in all directions. I have liner locks that will not fold under this pressure. OK, I know this isn't the normal abuse a knife will take. I still think the knife shouldn't fold when doing this. My Commader folded with just a few wrenches.

What is "hard use" anyway. Cutting an apple or opening a box sure isn't it. If I depended on my Commander in an all out knife fight I would most likely be dead after the first sharp blow to the spine of the blade thus causing the blade to fold. Isn't the Commander a fighter?

You're lucky enough to have gotten a good one! Sure wish at least one of the two I had would have passed.
