Hi
finally my crappy old disk/belt grinder combo cut out on me... ... ...so i went out and ordered a steel 9inch disk from k&g supply...
-- just got it... and man, its nice!

... i'm looking for suggestions on what kinda motor would be good.. ? and what hp is needed...

and which sheet abrasive gives good life behind a disk ?

thank you
Greg

1.5 or 2HP TEFC motor
Reversable
Floor switch is a MUST!
You can use sand paper but 9" disks will last longer

I'm using 3/4 h.p. which is plenty for my purposes. Reversible is definately a good feature to have.

thanks... i was thinking of a 1hp... its good to know i'm somewhere close to the mark.. ;)
-- also i was going to mount it so the disk is vertical...

i can see where a reverse switch would be handy.....

but why is a floor switch a better way to go ?

also where to get decent 9 inch disk abrasive?

thanks again
Greg

Norton or Tru-Grit for discs. A variable speed reversable 3/4HP will be a joy to work with.

I used a 1/2 hp for over 10 yrd before i graduated to a VS unit. All my discs reverse. I do not have a floor switch though i could see the benefits. I do have a vfd and will never have another disc without. It makes control so much easier. I buy regular 9x11 sand paper and apply it to the disc then trim off the excess. This in one of the advantages I find with a disc over a belt. If you run out of paper you can run down to the harware store and pick up some. It will keep you going. I use a sanding disc adhesive made for this purpose. If you use it sparingly and follow the directions you can get many paper changes between reapplying the adhesive. The stuff i use is called Franklin Sanding Disc Adhesive. I found it at HF last time i was there. I also buy it from Industrial Abrasives in PA. 3m also has Feathreing Disc Adhesive, same principle. I use the 3m adhesive remover when I want to clean off the build up. Personally I love the disc. It is all i have, no belt in my shop, besides a dremel powred one. It has done just about all i need it to do, if it does'nt then i use die grinders or files to get the final shape.

enjoy

thank you for the responses..

I have one of these K&G 9-inch steel discs mounted horizontally on a 1 hp Dayton DC, reversible VS, etc. The 1 hp is easily strong enough for my application. I did have a 1 hp vertical 12-inch disc unit once that was just too soft. The bigger disc really sucks down the power.

By all means get the stiff rubber pad K&G offers for this disc. It makes working the with the disc much nicer ... sort of like the rubber on your belt grinder's contact wheel.

I've found the Klingspor self-adhesive 9-inch discs to be a good value if you buy a few of them. Good peal-and-stick adhesive, decent abrasive life. These types of discs are nice because they're thick and lay on flat and peal off without ripping into little slivers that you'd be scaping off with solvent and a razor blade.
