When i got my steel heart 2 awile back it was advertised at 1/4". I never thought much of it until i recently started checking out the boards and seeing what the infihogs had to say. I then measured my SH2 and found it to be .287" which falls between the 1/4 and 5/16. Is this normal? I also measured my badger attack and it was .291", never thought it was thicker than my SH2 but the micrometer doesn't lie. Are all busse blades diffrent? I always thought they were ground from the same size bar and should be approximately the same thickness besides the 5/16 which i figured was ground from a thicker bar than the 1/4 models. Any info here would be great, thanks.

It sounds like your SH is 5/16" (a tad under after surface grinding, primary grinding, etc.)

All Busses will vary a little, but back then with much handgrinding, thigs were more variable.

This is very normal, especially for earlier Busses. On earlier models you'll find a large variety of thicknesses usually from .25" - .3125".

Even with the recently discontinued e-series there was an expected range, however it was on the thinner size....in the neiborhood of .24" - .28".

The above is non-inclusive of models designed with thinner stock in mind (i.e. LMS, Mojo, etc...)

tyuio,

Where did you measure your knives, on the pommels? Apparently on some of the older models Jerry used 9/32" stock, which would be .281". I would guess the thickness of the coating varies, but I would think it would add at least a couple thousandths on each side, so it sounds like your SH & BA might have been made from 9/32" stock. See the following threads for more info:

9/32 #1

9/32 #2
