I have been wanting to make a big knife for myself for a while, and this is what I came up with. She is two feet long (Which is how deep my heat treating oven is.) and is made of hand forged 5160 with curly maple and copper pins for the handle.

Cool piece - that looks like it would make a formidable bush sword.

That handle looks very comfortably contoured. What's the thickness of the forged ricasso, and does it taper much?

Really a nice looking piece and looks fun to use.

It is about a 1/4'' at the ricasso and around 1/8'' at the hump in the spine. But, it does a lot of the tapering in the last third of the blade. The forged finger guard is about 1/2'' wide.

Allen, The times I have done longer blades in my even heat the max I could get inside was 26" running it diagonally. I hope to see this one in Little Rock.....

Sounds like it should handle like a dream--congratulations on a well-designed piece.
