OK, I got an e-mail offering free shipping so I went to the site to look at Bucks. I noticed that there are 110's (BU1397) described as having "Birchwood" handles and right next to it a 110 (BU381) described as having "natural wood" handles. Both come with the black leather sheath but the "Birchwood" model is $5 more. Oh, and the "Birchwood" has NS bolsters and pins.

Is Buck producing a special 110 with solid birchwood handles especially for SMKW's along with laminated handled model or is the only difference the NS trim?

I suspect the slabs are identical......just some confused marketing jargon.

I also suspect the difference is primarily in the sheath.......the more expensive one offers a leather sheath along with the change to nickel bolsters.

Yeah.......looks to me like it's $5 extra for leather sheath and $5 extra for the nickel instead of brass.

Those slabs look the same.

Plumber, I think that the wood is most likely a laminate but the nickle silver frame is not usually offered and I would view it as a upgrade . I'd pay the 5$ more just for the leather sheath . DM

Yes, so would I, but the "natural wood" 110 also comes with a leather sheath. They also list a NS with "natural wood" with the nylon sheath. Same for the "Birchwood" model. I'm just curious as to why they call the wood two different things.

Don't take it so hard.

That's just the way it is.

Marketing fever breeds creative writing.

:D

Well, we will see when it gets here if it's different or not. I just ordered one along with another B&C Orange Bucklite Max to replace the one I gave away. I was going to order one of the NS 110's that said it was "natural wood" as a comparison, but when I read the description again, it says brass frame and bolsters even though their stock number has NS at the end of it.

Dave, I just checked them out too. I would say SMKW needs to update and clarify on their site. They have the 112 described the same way I believe on the previous page. One is birch and the other is natural. I think the only difference is the NS myself. Yes sheaths are both leather!! I look forward to pics!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

The guy who writes that stuff is clearly no genius.

The "NS" you mention refers to "Nylon Sheath."

Apparently they don't realize that people like yourself might understandably be confused and think the "NS" meant "Nickel Steel."

Not the first time SMKW has had problems describing product.

If only they had a genius doing their descriptions.......they could use "CS" for Cordura Sheath.

:)

I ordered some of these earlier in the year and the only difference I saw in them were the NS bolsters. Mine have the nylon sheaths. I should have waited and got the leather sheaths for the same price.

Yeah and they still offer that one (#BU3337) at the same price as the one with the leather sheath.

Yep, it just came today and other than the NS bolsters, it's just the same as any other recent 110. There's some variation in the "grain" pattern in the wood, but it's the same stuff. It is a pretty knife though with the NS frame, rivets and bolsters.

Here you go. The top one is a recent purchase from Walmart (brass). There's a difference in the handles, but I'm sure that's just the nature of "natural" materials and not because it's a differnt wood.

I agree! :D

Thanks for the pics, they look great! The nickel silver is a nice change of pace for a standard 110!!

I kind of like the look of the silver bolsters, I might have to check them out again when I have a bit more money ^_^
