Been wanting to make one out of leather for some time now. I carry this way during the winter, under my jacket. Until now I have always used para-cord or something a little thicker in a nylon type of cordage to secure it.

I knew Tractor Supply carried latigo lace in the equine department. So I went down and bought two lengths of this beautiful thick finished lace. Its a little over quarter of an inch thick and a little over half and inch wide. I opted for a natural finished one, as I planned on dying it anyhow.

I bought some brass finished hardware that fit the lace, as I was not sure what I was going to do. I opted out of any d-rings and clasps for two reasons; weight, and a more natural look. I think I made the right decision.

The leather was a dream to cut, drill, and sew. After my holes were cut, and extra strap sewn on. I then sanded it down lightly with some 120, then some 400. This got the finish off the leather and prepared it for dying. I went with Dark Mahogany for dye. After drying, 4 coats of super sheen finish, making sure to work it in well.

At the moment I am using leather lace to pull the rig together. I think it looks nice and it is reliable when knotted up. However I may get some brass leather screws with collars. And go that route. Time will tell. For now I am over pleased with it.

Hope you enjoy it!

Wow! Looks really good. How does it carry? Comfortable?

Thanks for the compliments folks!

GoNadz,

I have carried this style for a few years using 550 and other like nylon based rope. I must say I should have done this years ago. I made it today, so naturally wore it around the house all day haha. You forget its there. It has no bite in the neck whatsoever. I will be getting out on Monday for a day hike. Give it a good field test.

Its so rare to see such simplistic ingenuity that is inspiring - outstanding and thanks for sharing.

Very nice. I enjoyed your detailed photgraphs, thank you. You must let us know how it holds up in use.

Skog, nice work! That turned out beautifully and the picture tutorial was really helpful if someone wants to make their own. Very impressive.

I understand what you're saying with trying to keep it natural, but I personally would go the brass screw route, just so you have peace of mind about the laces coming untied or breaking.

Again, fantastic work!
