A Bali-Song suggestion/oberservation.

So I was browsing Benchmade's store yesterday, as I am wont to do, and I noticed something. Benchmade doesn't have a single balisong with a stainless steel blade. Now, I KNOW D2 is a good steel, but some of us work in wet climates, or have body chemistry that is inimical to tool and carbon steel. So my suggestion is this: I think Benchmade should offer a couple of their balisong models in 154CM or S30V. I personally think this would increase Balisong sales, as well as expand the market for the knives.

Anybody else have thoughts on this idea? Good, Bad, something else?

there was a limited run of 200 51's in S30V, I don't think BM's D2 steel rusts or pits like other D2's. All metal will rust or pit eventually, but there are many in FL that have never had an issue. Just my 2 cents:thumbup:

^Far as I'm concerned a limited run doesn't cut it. They come in small numbers, and usually cost more that the normal knife. Not that MUCH more, but it's been just enough to cut me out of several limited runs from pretty much every major company. And as for BM's D2 not rusting or pitting.... I'll concede it pitted and rusted SLOWER on me.... but my sweat is basically xenomorph blood. I had to sell it because I couldn't keep it clean for more than a few days at time before it rusted again. I really think that making the BM Balis available in 154Cm would be a good idea. I KNOW I'm not the only person that does this to knives.

^ I thought that had been discontinued, huh. Live and learn! I'll have to try and find one!

i've never heard of rusting d2 steel, unless strong acids and / or long exposure times are involved. i have several knifes in this steel, and things like cutting lemons and apples did not force any rust on my blades.

As far as the Bradley Mayhem is concerned, I believe the are discontinued although serrated versions seem to still be available on some sites. Plain edge versions you will probably have to rely on the secondary market. I have one as well, not my favorite flipper, but the BEST edc balisong I own or have handled.

The different offering of blade steel would be nice though I live in a climate where D2 rust is not a problem, Nevada. I would though like to see Benchmade offer titanium handle constriction as a standard production offering again as well as some with one piece channel handle construction. I find current layer construction balisong handles with all of their visible fasteners, which need to be loctited, to be ugly compared to most older BM and PCC balis or current Filipino Hand Made (FHM) balisongs. The FHM knives just appear elegant compared to any of the current BM offerings to my eyes.

^Tatfiend: I personally love BM's models EXCEPT for the steel. I wish they made it in something more resistant to corrosion so I could use it. I've rusted D2 griptillans by carrying them around for a few HOURS. I'm not asking for BM to give me a miracle never rusting balisong, I would just like something in 154CM or 440C. BM does both of those wonderfully, their S30V is great too, I would love that!

No it's still on Bradley's website. Does bradley take knives off of the site when they disco them?

I was basing their discontinuation on the fact that they have not been available in plain edge form in any of the larger online knife retailers in some time. Also from other posts I have read, it seems that both Bradley and Benchmade are very vague when people inquire about its availability.

^That's NEVER a good sign. I wish I could make a formal suggestion to Benchmade about this, but they don't take them for legal reasons*. I just know a LOT of users would appreciate having a stainless BM Balisong, especially those of us that have corrosive sweat or live in humid climates. I've tried getting one of the older 440C models, but the things cost WAY too much money aftermarket for me to afford.

*Not faulting them, just kinda sad I can't suggest it.

^I hear you, I live in Florida and luckily am fortunate enough to own 2 Benchmade 42s (440c and 154cm) as well as a Bradley Mayhem (s30v). I definitely prefer those blade steels as well. I do however also own 2 Benchmade balisongs with D2 steel, a 51 and a 41mc. I can say as of yet, rust and/or corrosion have not been an issue for me. But to be fair, I don't normally edc any of them, if I did, it would be the Mayhem.

^ I don't know anymore, I'm confused by the whole Bradely thing. All I know is that I want a stainless BenchMade Bali and I've TRIED to buy after market. The 440C model with Titanum handles, was priced at, and I'm not exaggerating: $450 USD. I can't afford the aftermarket, and BM doesn't currently make any models in stainless, so I'm at a real loss at what to do. My only options are to suggest they do it had hope they do it, or just give up and mope. Since moping never got jack done, I'm doing this.

Bradley Mayhems and Alias 1s and 2s are made by Benchmade. Bradley Kimuras are made by Kershaw. Bradley's Underboss auto is made by Protech. They design the knives and outsource production to other manufacturers.

^ Ah, that clears things up.

I really hope Benchmade sees this thread and considers it.
