My buddy Bill and I were out fishing this morning and as we were taking out our boats (er... one canoe and one kayak, really) I noticed a fellow and his teenage sons prepping their kayaks and fishing gear before getting out on the water. Then I spied something familiar. Could it be? Yes!

A BK-11 worn as a neck knife! I rarely see folks around here wearing neck knives. In fact, I don't think I've EVER seen anyone around here wearing a neck knife ('here' is Fayette County, GA just south of Atlanta).

We struck up a conversation and I found out he is a big fan of the BK-11 and his son did the handle wrap (which was pretty well executed). He commented about how he and his sons had recently come back from a 4-week canoe trip to the Boundary Waters region and the knife was with him all the time. (And to rub it in he mentioned that the fishing was great - the smallmouth were hitting every day. Grrrrrr.)

It made for a good wrap-up to a good morning - fishing, canoeing and talking to a fellow Becker enthusiast.

That's pretty cool, it's always fun to see someone else carrying Becker. I met a teenager here a couple months ago that had a BK11.

Did you turn him on to the Becker forum?

Awesome. I can see how a neck knife would be perfectly suited for something like that. Obviously he can't get to his belt. And if he is in enough trouble to find a big knife usefull, he probably has much bigger problems to deal with.

Also... smallmouth? dang, that sounds fun. Those suckers are a blast to catch.

When it comes to neck knives, does anyone else have reservations about a piece of 550 tied around their neck?

I thought I did. Didn't sound like anything I'd even want to try.
A few camp trips ago I thought "What the hell", and gave it a try.
It's actually very comfortable. I thought the weight would be an issue but it's not.
I've been rocking the 11 Necker Style ever since.
The 550 has become a permanant fixture on Thrillbilly's Kydex!
I'd say give it a try for a few hours and see what you think.
Just make sure to make a comfortable knot where the ends won't rub on your neck.

I did until I learned about a whipping knot. You can basically smooth down one end and whip the other around it so that when any pressure is put on the necklace it will come undone. Reference my thread about it for a pic of the knot. BK14-Neck-Carry-(pic)

Nice shot (but keep the compass away from the knife when shooting an azimuth!). BTW, the gentleman and his boys were rigging up Wilderness kayaks. Do Wilderness kayaks attract Beckers, or is it that Beckers attract Wilderness kayaks?

Thats more along the lines of what I was getting at. I don't wanna hang myself with my knife.
