A better absolute sharp edge than INFI?

SO I have spent most of today refineing edges of knives with this INSANE 60,000 grit sandpaper I got from HandAmerican.com

I have 7 different knives on the bench and until the last one in my opinion INFI took the SHARPEST edge.

But I just did one of Bill Buxtons forged 52100 knives and I think it is sharper than the INFI. By that I mean that it takes a edge that is finer and sharper.

This Buxton 52100 is some fine grained easy to polish sharp stuff man.

I bet INFI will hold the edge longer especially for hard use but damn......Woot this little knife is sharp... Not even sure how to test it to quantify how sharp it is.

Has anyone else found a blade steel that will take a sharper edge than INFI? Seriously until about 10 mins ago I thought INFI was top dog.

i have found that d2 or cpmd2 will take a finer edge than infi.

but i have also found that infi will take a beating better than any other steel i have used and keep the edge.

remember, it is the combination of attributes, not any single one, that makes infi special.

I think you mean 52100. :D

It's a very good steel... Swamprat use it and my little Neilson in 52100 keeps an edge for a long time.

What size is the Buxton?.. is there a way to rest the integrity of your edge?

once you get it sharp enough, the best test is to try splitting an atom. just make sure to wear your sunglasses.

The sharpest knives I have ever seen are Murray Carter's. They are unbelievable. (OK... time for my disclaimer lest I be exiled)... That being said, they are kitchen knives and would NEVER hold up to the hard use of a Busse. :D

Some porn for ya as follows: ;)

I have this Murray Carter Damascus fishing knife that has an edge that makes the Cultellus edge seem as sharp as a bowling ball (Yes, a slight over-exaggeration, LOL)... THAT guy can put a scary sharp edge on knives!!! I like it 'cause it feels to me like a custom Active Duty, although I'd bet the AD would take more punishment. :D

And who ever said that D2 will take a lame edge and hold it for a long time?

Im sure that if you thinned the edge on a Busse it would do better.

Dude.

With knives like that in your kitchen....I am looking forward to some dinner pics!

Fess up...lets see some food!

Before and after would be best!

Come JB,

quit teasing us.

We've seen your work on INFI!

If it's that good show it off.

I'm sure ......................:D:thumbup:

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: Beautiful!

Pretty much any well-treated tool steel is going to take a finer edge than INFI, but as others have stated, INFI is a better all-around compromise.

Err... too late for that! The only way anyone will see tonight's dinner is if I have WAY too much to drink tonight. ;)

I grilled out a nice prime sirloin over a mesquite fire tonight.... man... nothing like good meat cooked over an open fire.

I posed this in an earlier thread...

(notice Tiki torch to add some class to the place)

Hey bro,

got plenty class from the looks!

The grill/smoker is sweet@!

Lay down some Boston Butts for a BBQ!

MMMM!

I find that my CPM3V blades take fearsome edges. I have been told that the sharpness is a function of grain size and that 3V has some of the smallest. I have no experience with 52100, which is ball bearing steel, and said to be excellent.

I generally don't have this problem :) My Busse's are a bit sharper than my s30v and ats34 folders after a quick sharpening session, based on ease of hair popping. My experience has been the harder the steel the easier it is to get a sharper edge on. My ZDP-189 calypso 3 and Benchmade M2 AFCK (back when they were advertised as 64rc) are easily my sharpest knives.

Form follows function.

I would not expect my Busse knives to do the Job that my Murray Carter knives do.

But then I would certainly never expect my Murray Carter knives to do the Job my Busse knives do.

I have maybe 6 Murray Carter knives in my kitchen and just one Busse.

I do not currently take any Murray Carter knives out into the Woods and I do not ever currently carry a Murray Carter as an EDC, but it is an interesting thought.

I'm with yoda...

My ZDP-189 Spyderco is by far the sharpest I own,

It's a lot easier to split wood with my FBM though!

It's an apples to oranges argument. I know some of you shave with your INFI (and I'm OK with it!) But INFI is made to LOVE (Read: beat, plunder, pilage...)

Just my 2cents (with another 100 pennies, you would have a dollar!)
