A better system for reprofiling

There's a few knives of mine I'd like to reprofile, and even with the diomand rods on my sharpmaker, I feel as if it's more hassle then it could be. I've seen some other systems that look like they'll be better for reprofiling, like the DMT Aligner system and the Edge Pro Apex, but they seem to be two extremes in that the DMT is known to be somewhat flimsy from what I know, and the Edge Pro Apex is too expensive for me at this point. Is there anything inbetween?

Other names in guided sharpeners are Lansky, Smith, and Gatco. I chose DMT because it has the widest range of stones. As far as I know, DMT's extra extra coarse at 120 mesh is the fastest stone for manual edge removal to date. DMT Aligner clamp is all plastic, and I can see it breaking when handled roughly. However, it has stood up just fine for my use.

A belt sander will be the fastest for reprofiling but it requires some skill, you can probably find a 1X30" belt sander for under 100bucks and get a couple of 120/220grit belts to reprofile the edge.

Harbor Freight has a decent 1X30 sander for $ 39.99. A few belts from Lee Valley and you're set. Fast and efficient.

Practice on your neighbor's kitchen knives. The learning curve is fairly quick, and your neighbors will be happy, too!

Bear in mind, unless you're extremely hard on your knives, reprofiling is pretty much a one-time thing. So if you only have a few knives you want to give a performance tune-up :), a coarse-medium grit 8" benchstone should serve you well, and IMO is kind of a 'must have' for any blade enthusiast anyway: great for resharpening, fixing damage to an edge, and can be taken in the field.

Just one of several options.

I'm an edge pro guy, I'm rough on my knives and in general the knives I buy are worth more than the EP, so for me it was very easy to decide that maintaining my knives was top priority instead of getting another knife.

the EP isn't just for re-profiling, it's angle is adjustable, it has a very very wide selection of grits even glass tapes great for everything but convex edges.

I bought this Dmt D6x (extra coarse) on the bay for under $30.00 shipping included. I use a large rubber band to attach it to a sharpmaker rod. The extra course really makes a huge difference over the sharpmaker diamond rods when reprofiling.
