I wanted to take the time to say a great big "Thank You" to Steve Liley of Coal Creek Forge for doing me a couple of what he calls his "jack hawks" (...made from jackhammer points, a real good steel...). They are what he calls his "plain jane", working tomahawks. They have a hexagonal poll and a great, traditional tomahawk blade. Here is an excerpt of the note i sent him regarding these two "working' tools:
The hawks are blued and handled with about 20 inch handles, blackened, bees waxed, and ready to go to work. The blue varies from a deep blue to a purple/yellow. I told Steve that i wanted a couple of blued "working hawks", with about a 16 to 20 oz head. That is exactly what i got, and more. They are true heirlooms from another time, masquerading as ordinary working tools.
We are very fortunate to have men like Steve Liley who are genuine artists doing blacksmith work in this era of mass-produced, machine made everything.
Thank you again, Steve, for providing this great service for all of us who appreciate the old time ways!!

PS -- The total time from ordering these two "working" hawks from my initial e-mail until delivery was 10 calendar days.
....Steve: The hawks came via mail on saturday (...yesterday...) while my son and I were travelling to Kentucky (...near Louisville...). We came in late last nite and I finally woke up enough this mornin to take a look at the package. All I can say is WOW!!!.. The hawks are more beautiful and full of craftsmanship than the pictures show (...wanted to post pictures; but i dont have a photo posting account for the URL....). These tools will be carefully used, lovingly cared for, and much treasured. They will last a lifetime (...or more....). The fit, finish, and workmanship on these working tools is as good as any tools that come from the blacksmith forge as anything ive seen. Thanks again for taking the time to do these exquisite tools from another era for us. ...
