Before I started coming here to this subforum I knew next to nothing about sharpening. I had no knowledge of burrs, hitting the edge, what a micron is or what diamond pastes for strops were. My sole way of sharpening my knives was a lansky croc set. While I could could get some knives sharp I couldn't get some sharp at all. I seemed to make some duller with it. In a search for answers I found this wonderful place.
When I first came here I read every thread I could find on sharpening tips. I stared to realize that there were many different methods to get to the final result. Tons of different stones, guided systems, angled stone holders, strops and on and on. I stared to get information overload. Then I found one thread that became my obsession. knifenuts first sharpening thread. What he did to that Umnumzaan was just amazing. I made it my goal to someday no matter which method I chose to go I would be able to come semi close to what he did to that knife. While last night I went at it and got what I wanted. Super sharp and a really nice mirror edge. So thank you to knifenut for that awesome thread and everyone else for all the advice and information on this wonderful subforum. Here are some shots of my newly sharpened Umnumzaan.
