A bit OT but interesting read on the japan metals scandal

Just posting a link to an article and not commenting is generally frowned upon. But I wasn't aware of this and there are potential impacts to the knife industry via its use of Kobe steel (if it does). Powder steel was mentioned....

Don't know if steels related to knife production is involved or not, and if so to what extent. However, Kobe Steel (Kobelco) is the producer of the powder steel R2 which is also marketed by Takefu Steel as SG2 (special gold 2).

This sort of thing happened in the US when (strangely believe it) there was a steel shortage in the late 1960s. Washer stock was sold as tool steel. There were deaths. Shortly thereafter, much of the US steel industry died. Not cause and effect but interesting series of events.

Followed up on this story and it looks like all the concern is regarding steels; screws and bolts used in critical structures, aircraft, ships, autos, etc.

Whoah, thanks for posting this, had not heard about it. Couple this with the fact that New York wants to test driverless cars on the road next year....
