Right now I'm just calling it my SPF (spear point fighter) :D

The guard is made from a carbon fiber airboat propeller. It looks like a mix between G10 and regular CF.

This is a knife of many firsts. At 12 1/2", it's the largest one I've made, it's also the first two tone finish I've done. I've always liked spear pointed knives, this is the first one I've ever tried!! The blade material is 3/16" 440C with a tapered tang. Blade length is 7 1/4" from tip to guard, the top edge is sharpened 3 1/2". The handle is desert ironwood with stainless lanyard holes and single mosaic pin.

EDIT: updated picture

Damn Doc, that's awesome!! My jaw has dropped open, not sure what else to say. Keep it up!!

Take care,
Tom

Neil-

that is absolutely beautiful!! I love the guard, it looks great and contrats very well with the handle. Excellent looking knife!!

Keith,

I must credit Steve Johnson and Bob Doggett for the CF/hollow pin idea. I saw it on one of Steves bolsterd hunters at the Guild Show last year. Bob Emailed me a pic of one he did a few days ago. I thought the same idea would look good on the double guard.

I've cut myself twice on this sucker, trying to take pictures :( Maybe I should stick with smaller knives!!

That's just, well, AWESOME!

So whatcha workin' on next? Huh? What's that? Another large fighter? With a guard? Yeah?

:D

Neil, that's another fantastic piece! Very nice combination of materials and a little bit different than some of your other work. Keep them new ideas comin'! :)

This is the what I like--thinking 'out of the box'!

Great work Neil!

Neil - Superb job!! The entire knife looks slick, I especially like how the bevels are mirror polished  Congrats on a damn fine looking fighter!

OH MY :D
Doc, this is what alot of us have been waiting for!
Excellent job!

I just noticed you posted an updated pic. Is that I palm tree I see in the "mirror?" And what's that to the right? Looks like something I saw in the Fun-House at Six Flags :p

Damn. Here I am, 9:30 on a Friday night, drooling over this picture... Is it the knife, or is it just me???

I have never seen anything quite like that knife. Visually stunning, I imagine it is a great user as well. That blade is really shiney and looks like it would scratch pretty easy.

Guys,
This one was FUN!! The guard is actually made of 4 pieces laminated together. I SWEAR by 440C for a rich looking mirror finish. Using my new buffer for the first time......SUCCESSFULLY, made me a happy camper :D

Dexter,

The two tone finish is something that I hope to use quite a bit more on my fancier knives. No Kydex for those babies though!! Working with the 440C was a dream after my last run of S30V :)

Wulf,
You bastid, YES that IS a palm tree and NO you didn't see that other thing in the house of mirrors, LOL ;) I'm actually skinny, it's the reflection that makes me LOOK like I weigh 300lbs!!!!!!
I have to EEEEEEEEEEASE into the realm of larger knives!! The CF guard is something that I've wanted to do for a while but will most likely be an option. Stainless would be stronger however this CF is pretty darn tough!! All in all, my goal with this one was to make the spear point look right and have the handle/guard feel good in the hand. Now I can move ahead to the next one with confidence ;)

Keith,

It IS shiny but once the first scratch is in it, it's broken in and good to go !

Neil

Smokin'!!! That is one bad ass blade for sure.

Scratching that blade would be painful though. What's that? Boron Carbide? Yeah, a "black chrome" blade would look great and be scratch resistant as well. To say nothing about sinister. So how about a "black/wood" Blackwood?
