New to the forum. I thought i knew allot about knives. And i still do i think. Im a beginner basicly. Ive done HUGE research and so far collected a Spyderco DrangonFly 2, Spyderco PM2 and a ZT 0560. Now as the title suggests im trying to find a knife for everything. I figure the dragon fly will due for easy tasks (tape, Paper. etc) I bought the PM 2 for slicing (food prep mostly, Self Defence if need be) and the ZT 0560 is a heavy duty folder (I guess for wood tasks) granted any of these could do another use if need be.. but i would like the best for its purpose. So i began to look at fixed blades and Esee knives.. Love the izula.. but i guess one of my folders could serve the same purpose?) Thinking about buying the Esee5... or a Esee 4 and 6. I want knives to cover everything. from little tape to dressing a animal... self defense to choping wood.. Collecting knives to do it all basicly. Am i doing good so far? what about the esee knives? hear people say 5 is a tank... which makes me want it... but maybe 6.... maybe another brand of knifes i havn't looked at yet?

Money isnt an issue. Plan on buying a machete and axe as well. Just want a selection if and went SHTF were to happen. Im a collector and so far all my knives have been "Queen safe" as yall put it

You are doing good so far.
I use my Native 5 everywhere, for everything.
The thick blade section closest to the tang gives it strength, but the tapered FFG blade slices well.

Sorry, no fixed blade recommendation from me. I don't like them.

Should note im buying a Spyderco Civilian next week. Guess you could say most is for survival. Thanks!!

I want something to be able to do simple tasks like cutting paper mail and tape to cutting wood, defense if need be. Even hunting for an AXE as well... i want all bases covered SHTF i wanna be prepaired

I looked at the native before i got the PM2... good... but not what im looking for. Mainly asking about the fixed blades

I've owned the ESEE 3, 4, 5, 6, LS, and Junglas.

The '4 and '5 are awful, in my opinion. The both feel "wrong" and don't cut as well as other options, making them poor knives. The '4 has the same handle as the 3, with a thicker and longer blade. It just feels off in my hand. The '5 is ground too thick to cut well, and is heavier than a knife needs to be. It feels like an axe blade, without the handle.

The '3 is a bit heavy, but feels great in the hand and the blade isn't more robust than it has to be. It can do 99% of anything you can do with a knife, and it takes up very little space on a belt or in a backpack. I got rid of mine because the blade has about as much cutting length as my Spyderco Military, which folds in half and weighs less.

The LS and '6 balance perfectly. The '6 has a crappy injection molded sheath that works OK. The LS has a kydex sheath that couldn't be more perfect.

If you have to have a coated blade, I highly recommend the ESEE LaserStrike.

maybe another brand of knifes i havn't looked at yet?

Are Esee blades the best ya can get as far as fixed?

LOL no.

Bark River and Blackjack, both are made at the same factory and both have an incredible warranty.

After several knives, my "go to" for the past year and more has been a Bark River Bravo 1 in S35VN. It has been neglected and abused, and shows no rust for it (I wore it in a river a couple of weeks ago, while fossil hunting. The water was up to my armpits at some points). The convex edge is easy to keep razor sharp. They balance perfectly, over your forefinger when gripped, and they're beautiful. It has a lifetime warranty too.

Money isnt an issue. Plan on buying a machete and axe as well.

If money isn't an issue, definitely try a Bark River. You'll be glad you did!

As far as an axe, be really really careful. It's very easy for an axe to skip off of what you're chopping and end up in your leg. Very bad if you're out in the middle of nowhere, or anywhere really.

Swamp Rat RatManDu. Regardless of the price, you won't find a better utility fixed blade. It's the only knife I own multiples of, and I own a lot of knives. :)

Well for a general use fixed blade the Bark River and Swamp Rat are top notch but no knife is perfect for all tasks. That is why you NEED a specialized knife for every task! Sure it is important to have a knife that can chop wood in your BOB but that's no reason not to also pick up a kukri and a camp axe ;) You know just in case you don't have to bug out. At least that's what I tell the girlfriend.

What you will realize over time is that there really isn't a perfect "do-it-all" knife. If there was then everyone would get one and there wouldn't be much point to collecting. What you will also realize is that now that you have started collecting it will never end!!! Lol

I was on the fence between an Izula 2 and ESEE 3. The Izula 2 has a 3/16" thick blade, which is slightly thicker than the 1/8" of the 3. I couldn't think of a time when I would carry the Izula 2 but wouldn't be able or willing to carry the 3, and I don't have a need for 3/16" thickness in a short blade. I opted for the 3, which gives slightly more length and a grip that I prefer.

When the ESEE 3 falls short, a Laser Strike provides extra length and heft, which with a lanyard to choke back allows for great function for light chopping and wood harvesting tasks. It's very robust at 3/16", and has a beefy grip for comfort during hard work.

I can't speak for everyone, but a 3 and LS cover every need I could run into.

There's no do it all knife. That idea really is a myth. Just recently I made a chart. On one side I listed all the tasks I needed a tool for while at work, at home, traveling(car), and while camping. On the top I listed different types of knives. The end result was:

1)A SAK classic for the scissors, eye glass screw, and tweezers.

2)A Spyderco Military for food prep on the go and when I need something that just freaking cuts like the dickens.

3)A large blade for camping where a machete and my SYCKO 711 tied. Leaning toward the machete as it's lighter and more people friendly. I was a little surprised that a hatchet didn't make the cut.

4)And the crown jewel of my selection...don't laugh:D...a SAK electrician. This little guy ticked off 3/4's of my requirements.

Notice there is no medium fixed blade in there. I was shocked about that because I always thought that was the way to go. Nope, not for me I guess. If you're looking at medium knives however I'd highly suggest the Survive GSO series. The best I've tried in that size.
