A brand of pocket knife only the strong can use!

So, I handed my brother my GEC #36 EZ-open Sunfish... and my brother is a big guy. An inch taller, and always been a slender and fit athletic guy. He tried and tried to pull that knife open, and got apocalyptically angry when I pulled it open as easy as you please. Due to odd (and non-life-threatening) medical issues, I'm down from a very active 350 to a far less so 245lbs over the course of three months. I'm still big and fat, but I was worried about my status as a "big guy."

It felt nice to have to open and close that knife for my "little bro." I told him it was a special brand of pocket knife that only the strong could open and close safely, and did he want my old Opinel? Man, it ticked him off... fantastic!

it's funny how use to difficult opening knives we get as traditional knife guys. Most of the people I work with know not to ask me for my knife because half stops freak them out.

Great story by the way!
 
I handed a #73 to my old roomate. He tore his thumbnail. He handed it back and told me it was un-openable. It was what I consider about a 6 on the pull scale. I opened it with my pinkie finger and handed it back. He is 6'6" swat, and athlete. Of course, I have always been stronger.

Some of the GEC's are bear trap tight. No question... Others not so much.

It's a personal thing in the end, what works for one guy might not work for the next guy.

I have seen the same phenomenon with my traditional knives. I hand them to a non-knife person and they have all kinds of issues getting some of them open...especially the more stiff spring of the bunch. Also, its interesting to see a gun newb rack the slide of a 1911...they make much harder than it should be. Its all in the technique.
 
As a follow up... I'm down to 230. I eat my yogurt three times a day, and hit the weights every tuesday and thursday, and hit the bike trails, with my little one in her trailer in tow, every weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 15 miles a day. I'm asking my wife for a Lumberjack single blade in buffalo horn for X-mas. She'll go for it, as the metal "cutter" on the spool of her favorite, expensive dental floss broke into shards the day she bought it, and she has been relying on me to flip open my GEC #36 everyday to cut her off nine pieces (Her, me, the kid, 3x/day.)

My brother still can't open my Sunfish.

To be honest... I kind'a like a heavy pull, but only when the knife pattern allows it to not be a problem. For instance, on a well exposed blade in closed position, like a pruner or laguiole, I think it's great. But on blades that barely are exposed on closing, that's when I sometimes hate a hard pull. I guess it all depends on the knife, but don't care for a weak pull on any knife. I am not saying that a weak pull always means a too easy close... but that's how it seems to be on knives I've handled.
