A Brief Glimpse Into My Carbon Fiber Obsession

So being a Mechanical Engineer by trade, I have a natural interest in Materials Science. I have an affinity for carbon fiber left over from my mountain biking days, so when I discovered CF knife scales, I was hooked. I have many more knives in my collection, all users by the way, but this is what I have acquired thus far in CF. For the record, the Case Med. Stockman is the newest addition, and the Spyderco Caly 3 Damascus is the oldest one.

Another bit of CF for the thread. Les Baer Monolith Heavyweight with 1-1/2" guarantee. I use this gun to shoot 12" steel plates at 55 yards, extremely accurate and extremely fun! The grips are VZ Carbon Fiber Slants, very grippy without being overly aggressive. Over this past year, I've probably EDC'd the Southard more than any of my other knives. It's blade to handle ratio is excellent, the steel is amazing, and it carries very unobtrusively when clipped in my front right pocket, one of my all time favorite knives!

Here is the Baer with a Colt Lightweight Commander with smooth VZ CF grips and a Chaparral. The Colt and the Chaparral made for a very light and compact EDC package, quite comfortable.

Lastly, even though there is no knife featured in this picture, this 10/22 has a carbon fiber wrapped barrel which makes it very light and easy to shoot. This is the gun that I use to teach beginners, lightweight, easy to handle, almost no recoil and very accurate. It can make anyone feel like they're shooting like a pro.

Very nice collection.

Here's my CF collection so far. Not much, but still growing.

These 2 are my favorites, the CF is jaw dropping in person.

Always thought it'd be neat to see more of the types of CF lays represented in knives.

From boring stuff like Uni directional, 6k, twill weaves to the flashy fashion stuff like honeycomb and 12k.

My life will be complete when I have something with "marble carbon fiber" scales

That stuff is cool. Super easy to mold up too since you don't have to worry about visual lines and crazy strong for its intended use. I'm surprised at the cost for a set of scale blanks...

Yep, it's some pricy stuff. That's probably why it's only found on customs.

I was going to have my 0562 dressed up in marble cf by BellaBlades, but I couldn't find the right thickness. I ended up with silver shred CF instead, and this stuff if far more beautiful than any CF I've seen.

Does your shred have tiny air bubble holes in it? That's the only thing I've found wrong with my silver shred but doesn't bother me one bit since I understand the process in which the blanks are made. Mine aren't noticable unless look really close, about 1/2-1 mm diameter.

Yes, but like you said, they're small and part of the process of the material. Dosent bother me either, shred cf isn't like traditional cf, in that I mean that shred is literally "shreds" of cf suspended in a resin matrix. You can actually shine light through it on certain spots, not sure if you noticed this.

Nope I sure haven't but will put a light up to it tonight and check it out. Prolly rather cool looking I would imagine.

I'm down with this thread:thumbup:

On top of that, I've got keyman making me a set of CF scales for my blacked out PM2 that should look very nice. He's using this type of CF:

Blues Bender, that is a fine collection you have there. I've been eyeing a Wayfarer for a while now, especially the CF with the moonglow pivot ring. I appreciate you adding to the thread, extra pictures always are an improvement.

^^^Krissig12, you've got a great collection of your own right there. Keyman does some fantastic work, I'll be that PM2 turns out very nice. Please post pics when you get the scales and get them on that knife, I'm very interested in seeing those. In fact, I have a digicam and DLC PM2 that I'm not completely in love with. It's my 2nd one, bought the first one about a year or so ago, didn't fall in love with it so I immediately sold it. I got sucked into the hype and bought another and remember why I didn't love the first one. Maybe some CF scales can help change my mind. If not, I can always put the package up on the exchange.

Eh, I think Para2s are great, but nothing will ever please everyone. I've been carrying my Manix more recently.

Some really nice pics in here. I don't have any super nice cf, but I do like cf:

Not a great pic, but I'm loving this little fixed blade by KWB.

Have a Chaparral as well, great little knife, really like the texture on their twill.
