Over the years a lot of you have seen pics of me on different hunting trips, well this thread is about the guy that took most of those pictures, Brown Delozier

I first meet Brown as a very young hunter that was in New Mexico on a Pronghorn Hunt. I had just shot a 17 inch goat and was sitting up on a knoll glassing another hunter and his guide putting a stalk on a nice goat. The guide did his job by getting his hunter with in range of the goat but the hunter botched the shot and after a few more bad shots he ran out of bullets (real prepared hunter) the goat was down but trying to get up ........... all of a sudden this guys guide jumps up sprints across the open terrain tackles the goat and finishes him with a knife.

Needless to say I was astonished......the guys guide turned out to be Brown Delozier.

The years of playing ball at Oklahoma University and one year in the pros made this guide capable of going the extra mile :)

That night in camp Brown and I took to talking and an immediate friendship was kindled.

That chance meeting in NM lead to a 20 year friendship so far and a lifetime of shared adventure.

Brown took me under his wing and drug me from Asia to Africa and half way to hell and back. A better mentor , guide , hunter and friend would be impossible to find.

We have humped some brutal ground together, from negative 30 degrees to well over 100. We have climbed to 17000 ft and bitched and complained about what we considered a vacation to be . On three continents we embraced the great outdoors and laughed our ass of he whole way . A better companion would be hard to find.

Browns hunting career has spanned a lifetime and touched more people than anyone could ever imagine.

As a boy I sat on the family farm while my grandfather sat in his chair by the fire reading to my brother and I tales from Ruark , Hemmingway and the like. This sparked a desire to see those far away places and a love of adventure that Brown Delozier helped me realize.

Well on to the knife content

Besides being one of the best hunters I have ever had the pleasure of sharing a camp with Brown is a tremendous skinner. To the point of being a surgeon

To skin an animal is simple ........but to cape a trophy on the side of a mountain and turn its lips and eyes with the precision of a plastic surgeon is completely another animal

Brown excels at this and is very particular about the size of knife that he uses. On the ranch in Texas that used to be an annual pilgrimage for me there was a skinning building , walk in coolers , etc. There was always a case of paring knives

He would go thru them by he 100's and I used to kid him about getting a good knife. He would just laugh and say he didn't have time to sharpen um :)

Brown has a large collector of high end firearms and when he shot his Big Elephant Bull he had a tremendous idea on how to use the trimmings off the bottum of his 65 pound tusks. Ya see when they mount the tusks in the base they remove a little bit of Ivory from the base.

Well Brown don't play so when he wanted to find a maker to make him a fine hunting knife he went to no other than Bruce Bump

On the blade is the logo of his Outfitting operation. It is a compilation of his daughters names

Here's the Bull the ivory came from

Damn you have done it all Joe! Great story and photos, thanks for sharing this. Will be looking for Bruce to chyme in hopefully.

Great story, wonderful knife. Your friend has a bunch of great trophies. Love the sheep, the slam and the Marco Polo. Congrats to both of you on a great and lasting friendship and to your friend on a great knife.

Chris

Joe, thanks for the bigger than life post. I didn't realize you were so close to Brown although I did see you in some of the hunting photos on his website. If you can, post a link to his web page. The collections of big game hunting photos is second to none.
Brown was a pleasure to work with. He showed me 3 different knives that he liked so I combined all three and added some twists of my own and showed him 3 renderings to choose from. He chose the handle from one and the blade from another. This knife is the result.
It has 416 front and rear bolsters, tapered full tang, Jere Davidson engraving and a Claude Scott sheath.

Fantastic pictures. You literally could not buy those experiences for any amount of money.

It's the kind of stuff that most of us wish for our whole life.

Great Bump too. From my limited dealings with him, you could not ask for a better guy.

He may not remember, but in the past he has invited me to visit (I have never been in a position to go see his shop, as I am quite a drive away in central WA).

He once offered to heat treat a 5160 knife for me (if I remember correctly, about 7 years ago). I have not finished the knife! It is a "Work in Progress"

Years ago, he was looking for an apprentice. I asked my wife if I could quit lawschool and go learn to make knives.

Amazing post with equal photos(that trophy room is incredible). Thanks so much for sharing Joe! I hope i can take on 10% of where you've been around. It'd be amazing to see some video of your hunting trips or Brown skinning down one of those catches. Keep us updated when his book gets finished

The knife is terrific. The story is even better. Should be an article - it`s most of the way there already.
