i purchased a buck 501 from a friend on the forum a little while back. it was one of the older ones with the micarta handles. i loved that little knife. the "line" of the knife made it a great cutter. it rode in my pocket every day.
...until it didn't. i do not lose many things, and i have no idea where it went.
fast forward to this afternoon. there is a leather repair shop in my town. it is literally 150 yds from my house. i decided i needed a couple supplies, so i stopped in. a holster in the case caught my eye. i looked at it for a sec, while wondering how much the guy would charge to have one made for my revolver. but, then my eyes shifted a few inches to the left. there was a small, black buck sheath with a tag that read, "old Buck knife with leather sheath $10". Sold!
this one has the block letter "BUCK 501 (dot) USA". i discovered through posts on this forum that the 501 with a dot on the right, is most likely from 1984-5. thanks for the information.
this knife was well-loved. the blade has been sharpened a lot, as it has lost a lot of steel. to me, the history is part of the fun. i let my mind take a sec to think about that...about all the use this knife saw over the last 30 years. it must have quite a story. anyway, it's interesting to me.
i am glad to have a 501 back in my pocket. not sure i could have more fun on a friday night for $10.
