A Buck From the Future?

A friend of mine recently go a 110 from a local pawn shop for $20. He showed it to me, and we cleaned it up. The date code is a half-circle, oriented like the letter "U", with a dot in the middle. I just looked it up and this code will be used in 2014. I thought it could be a 1998 (same symbol, but no dot) but the tang didn't have any scratches, so it's not just wear. I'll get some photos next time I see him; I didn't think it was important at the time. Come 2014, it won't matter anyway, but how about it? Could this be a fake? Or does he have a Buck from the future?

I'd like to see a pic of that tang.

Do you think I could get the address of that shop. I'd like to get a stock market tip.

Unless the future brings us pictures......as we learn from the past......

It never happened.

My terrific son, M.E., did a Rockwell test for me once. Once. Banged two or three dents into the blade, like you might get with a a nail-starter, in a random pattern. Got the results all right.

I do remember Joe saying that Rockwell tests are done below the part of the blade that will show......thus they ordinarily would NOT explain any strange dots that we see on Buck blades.

I pretty much figured it didn't come from the factory like that. I'll get a photo next time I see him, or I'll get him to E-mail me one, but it most definitely isn't a scratch or accidental marking. I'm guessing someone used a Dremel and a steady hand to add a dot.

The dot has been talked about several times here on the forum. It could be the '98 date code along with the Dot which has been said to represent a mid year production change. This could mean any number of things. The Dot has been linked to these "mid- year production changes". Some small change they made to the blade during the year that really has no effect on the knife but an extra stamp to signify there was something.

However, with "Production Change" dots.....we would see A LOT of that same configuration, not just one odd knife--and this is the only one I've ever heard of.

So, I suspect THIS ONE is just a stamp that's been damaged or tampered with.

Hope we get to look at it, though.

:)
