A Buyer's Guide to Man-Bags

Someone needs to turn him on to the Maxpedition bags. Specifically the Fat Boy.

I sent him an email and the link about the Maxpedition line. :D

Yeah, I'm surprised too. Let's take another thread with some worthwhile information and turn it into a joke.

I just got a FatBoy about a month ago and I love this thing. I don't like having stuff in my pockets (unless they are cargo pants/shorts pockets) so this has totally changed my world :D I have no problems telling people it's my "man purse" and my wife thinks it's a hoot

I know you guys dig your Fatboys, any one have side by side experience with one and the Thermite? I'm about to go man bag, Fatboy is in the lead, but the Thermite looks pretty versatile as well. Probably go S-Type so I can keep my right hip free, but honestly I like the original configuration a bit more. Wish it had a mesh water bottle pocket, and I think a mod to sway plastic clip for velcro might happen as well.

You can purchase a Mini Roly-Poly with attaches to the bag with Malice clips. It opens up into a bag (mesh or solid, pick one) which will fit anything up to a 32 oz. Nalgene bottle.

Man-bag ..... Or European carryall.. ? lol
I carry a man bag and have for a few years , used to be a laptop style all black backpack but I opted out for something more concealable , a carrying case for a Black and Decker cordless drill.
I'm still waiting for the first news story about a man fighting off a mugger by beating him over the head with his man-bag lol.
The thing is , once you are used to carrying one you feel naked without it and just like the ladies , I can rarely find what i'm looking for on the first try.
As to what I carry ?
MP3 player
Econo size pepper spray
several knives of various uses
a few sharpeners
cell phone
gum
a few different small LED's
a few pens
smokes
few lighters
smaller EDC survival kit
checkbook
digital cam
Axe spray
whistle
medicine
a MT and a few tools
a mini propane torch
small bottle of Break Free
and a few other odds and ends.

now how could I possibly carry all that junk without my trusty man-bag :D

His choices are mostly European fancy-boy-ish, with a few cool messenger bags thrown in.

I've actually come to the conclusion that the Fatboy is best for those who are just looking for the tactical look (although at some angles, it can look fancy-boy-ish as well). If you're looking for a well-designed across-the-shoulder bag, I've come to the opinion that the sporting packs work much better. I'm currently using one from REI, and have been looking at others.

the advantages:
- The REI bag stays put right in the middle of your back. The Fatboy tends to move around front whenever you don't want it to. The new Fatboys have a little anchor to prevent this by attaching the bag to your belt loop, but this "solution" prevents you from twisting your bag to the front when you actually want to do so.

- The REI bag feels like it holds the weight tight to my back. The Fatboy feels like it holds it out farther from my body.

- The REI bag is better-organized, conveniently with all zippers, and a leashed pull-out small-item carrier. Also has a cell phone carrier up front, and a small pocket on top of the bag well-positioned for ipods and the like. The Fatboy has that clunky clip to get into the main compartment, and for some items, you have to use both the clip and a zipper.

- Personal opinion here: the Fatboy looks "too tactical" in some environments. The sporting-style bags just look cool.

- On the plus side, the Fatboy has attachment points for more modular storage units, but this makes the Fatboy even clunkier to carry.

I've got a Fatboy S-Type on its way to me. I never thought I'd go the "man bag" route but recently saw someone with one and thought I'd give it a shot. I'm just dreading the comments that I'm going to get from my friends, but we'll see how that goes. Even if I don't use it as an EDC bag, I am considering taking a trip later this year and I think that the Fatboy is would be useful as a travel bag to hold my stuff as opposed to the backpack that I normally carry.

Damn--I knew you were going to see this... :footinmou :D

BigHonu is the purse-carrying forumite that convinced me to go with the man-purse :p

Does it come with a Kramer mansier? (Seinfeld joke)

"Honey, when I die, sell my guns and knives for what they're worth and not what I told you I paid for them."

Nothing girly about a WWII British Officer's Essential Pouch. (Except maybe the size - about 5 x 6 x 1)

Joe, how about a link to that specific model?

Thanks
