Everybody has been doing some cool cable knives lately so I forged this the other day.Decided to threw this 10 inch bladed Bowie together today While I was waiting for a blade to finish it's heat treat.Plus I didn't have any kids home today so no interuptions(yeaaaaaa)
The blade is 4 different bars the two center bars are big wired cable that I welded square and then added two pieces of paper cutter steel to two edges then twisted then cut it in two pieces and then put two pieces of fine cable i welded 4 pieces together and made a small bar from to the back edge and cutting edge.
The handle is a steel frame with Mammoth Ivory and Nickel Silver rear bolsters at a total length of 4 1/4 inches long, and a Nickel silver guard.
I actually just finished the handle today;) :p
What do you guys think.I believe this one needs some engraving done on the rear bolster...
Bruce

Bruce, your knives are so good it's almost Dull to watch you "throw them together ". This one's no exception. Just beautiful. That pattern is also my second favorite. I love the long and lean look of your Bowies!

Seeing your 4 1/4 handle length reminds me of a guy who wanted to buy some of my knives, of the sample I sent him he said the handle was to small (about the same length as yours) so I took what he said to heart and started making my handles 5". I thought he was wrong, mind you I'm sure they have their place but don't you think that 5" is on the long side? The worst part is I was/am developing my style and he munged up my creative development. Am I wrong? Your Bowie looks excellent.

A 5 inch handle is a great length for a general Knife that you would try and sell at gun shows,They fit a majority of the people.I myself prefer between a 4 1/4 inch and 4 1/2 inch handle. Most all the older Bowies had thin short handles, like this one isn't much over 1/2 inch thick....My best advice to you as a beginner is to keep creating your own style,Check the handle fits with your hand, show them to a few friends and have them comment on what they think about the handle size and length. When dealing with a customer I usually will ask what size handle they want.
Just check them and make sure they feel good and are comfortable in all positions that the knife might be held in and you will do fine.

as per usual.. Very kewl.

i really like the blade .. the pattern lends itself nicely to the shape of the blade.
it looks like it would be Really nice in the hand too ..
i think you are right .. the rear bolster looks just ripe for the engravers picking :D
are you going for a throated sheath for this?

and you are welcome here anytime .. especially if you can bring that power hammer in your suitcase
;)
or sherry and i could come there and i could bring my jewellery kit.
hmm ... i think one of us should get some large amount of money together..
:D

i myself love the beauty in simple and clean. when guys make them with damascus blade, bolsters and some wild handle, its to busy to enjoy. i put wild handles on my stainless, and simple on damascus. leaving the bolster plain really draws your eye to the dam, blade and keeps ir balanced

Nice looking Bowie. I also agree with Bruce on the handle length. I used to make them 5" or so, but that doesn't look/feel right on period pieces.JMO.

Nice very nice job Bruce I like it.

Now Bruce
you have been very creative and for the life of me
I don't under stand why you haven't made Donna and mini
bowie to hang on that belly ring?
I'm working on one now,,
Now, if I don't see one on her pretty soon
I may have to send her one of mine.:D :D

Thanks for all the kind words everybody...I also agree that a clean simple handle on a Damascus piece is sweet, but I think a little engraving would set this off even better as the Ivory is plain and thus won't distract from the Damascus only enhance it.I may just leave it as is and let the customer decide what he wants when someone buys it.
I think it deserves at leats a throat and tipped sheath Dion,I think it would be easier to carry your jewelery supplies than my Power Hammer:D
Dan I was going to make her one but she was afraid that it would pke her to much. She has had other charmes on it that did poke her or would get caught in the clothes and pull on the ring thus hurting her and so she has about decided to leave the charms off.But I will try again.
Bruce

Bruce E. You have done it again. The damascus pattern is too nice, handle is too pretty, pommel is too big, choil is too cool. I could go on.

I agree the engraving is a must. I would scrim a color picture of a high-priced saloon girl on the ivory. Bruce B

Beautiful pattern there Bruce, you have some talent!!!!
Now yet out there and throw a good truck together so that you can come to the Fall family hammer-in.:D

Mark

Bruce you could make a mini silver sheath for the mini
bowie hang it up side down like a neck knife
and in the place of on ball on the end of the
sheath put a necklace clasp to hook it to the BB ring.
it would come on and off easyly for just showing.
I'll put the mini Bowie I'm make on a thread.

Dan,Donna said that a mini on the ring would be cool if I could make it so it could be taken on and off the ring without taking the ring apart. So I guess I will have to make her one now...Thanks:D Now I will have to find the extra time to get one made.I think I will make it hang from a spring clasp like on a neklace that way she can wear it when she wants.
Bruce

Dan,Donna just came back home from work as there power went out and they sent everybody home (cool)I told here what you suggested for the mini knife and that I would have to try it and she looked at me me and said "But I wanted Dan to make it for me,that would have been cool"....Gee I guess she doesn't think I can make a mini..But she said she would wear one for the pictures and when whe was wearing clothes that it wouldn't get caught on..
So What is this going to cost me?;)
Bruce

Sounds like a trade coming on
can you make a metal sheath for one this small?
I'm sure you can..
we'll work something out
can you imagine the lades with these hanging
from their BB ring on a Gold 2" braided chain
in a bikini OMG I can see it now...

Another beauty!
Gotta love those coffin handles. Engraving would be cool, maybe something scroll-y or a fleur-de-li (sp???)
Too cool...
Off to find a drooling smiley,
I remain,
Ebbtide
