For those of us who have had the pleasure of meeting with John Powell on these and other forums, we know that he is the foremost student on khukuries and khukuri lore. For years John has been working on a manuscript for his book (From Kookeries to Khukuri). I know that recent concerns have forced his attention to other issues; but, I would like to encourage him to make another attempt at publication. The market should be broader now that Atlantic Cutlery has done much to broaden the base of antique khukuri collectors.

Such a text: perhaps 150 pgs, with 150 B/W 1/2-page plates, 25 full page color plates, and 50 pages of detailed informative text, might do a signed hardbound first edition at $100 a copy. If so, I would be willing to sign up for serial numbers 0001-0010.

How about the rest of you?

This is a book which should be published. One which I very much look forward to having in my book case. If the only way it can happen is by twisting the publisher's arm, then so be it. It is time to step up to the plate to show John our continued interest and support.

It might be a good idea to talk to John. N2S

Yes, but I would rather measure the level of interest here first before bothering John on this again.

I am interested. If it ever became an official declarative to publishing, I would commit 100 dollars for a book.

Before this builds steam Mr Powel should be notified.

In this modern era there are "print on demand" publishing outfits that will print materials and send them out to customers as they are ordered. See for instance http://www.lulu.com/ .

I've bought numerous books from such outfits, that would not otherwise be very publishable because of the limited audience. I suggest John consider publishing through such an outfit. It does not require front money from the publisher or author for making a run of the book.

If the book is good I think it will find buyers.

Knowing John it will be good.

Munk,

I have sent him an email with the link to this thread. If anyone has direct contact with him, it would help if they mention this to him.

Now that would be premium collector's edition. There are only 25 of those and each comes with complete with a professionally mounted and dedicated HI Kothimoda (version of the Berk Special). All for just $1,500:D

I would be willing to buy a $100 signed edition. Johns knowledge and collecting experience needs to be shared with the world.

"Is that it - N2S"

No, I'd get one as well, some way. Either by hook or by crook, probably have to sell a knife or two, but I'd damned sure get one!!!!
John's book is sorely needed by true collectors and just by persons interested in the history of knives.
Methinks the only collector books on any individual knife has been those on the Bowies and Antique Bowies.

Well of course Id have one, but I know sadley it isnt going to happen.

Thats why I suggested you speak to John first.

Spiral.

I would too.

A Japanese sword collector friend of mine once said, "people will spend £1000 on a Japanese sword to find it is worth £100 but they won't spend £30.00 on a book that would have proved it, before before buying that sword. Buy books, read them and then buy swords".
