A Cane Holder for my Backpack

I often walk with a cane due to pain in my joints and tendons after spending a couple months in the hospital. Apparently after spending 27 years doing martial arts your flexability and simple abilities can go away in just a couple months.

I use a cane mostly on the bad days and anytime I am on my feet for any length of time. Usually just to take the weight off my hips and knees. (Did I mention I have been teaching Hapkido Cane Fighting for 15 years?) Yeah, maybe this was meant to be. Anyway, I often want to get my cane out of the way for short periods of time, when I need to use both hands for something. I've been making do but would like some sort of cane holder to put on my backpack. If all else fails I will just run to the hardware store and start looking around, but I need something that can grip it, preferrably with rubber grips that won't damage the cane, but keep it secure.

I can't be the only one looking for something like this...can I?

What kind of backpack? Or, more to the point, does it have molle, or straps etc?
Are you wanting to draw it out, like a sword from a sheath, from a PVC tube? Or do you want just a few loops to keep it from swinging around?
Maybe a cloth tube, like I have for my bo staff and bokken?

I usually take my walking staff with me, and it's very light, but sometimes a pain to deal with when not in use. Sometimes it's just in the way, mine is longer than a cane, and I would want to be able to put it away while the backpack is on, quick and easy.

Maybe there is a tent pole bag that you can modify? PVC tube seems overboard, may rattle or scratch up your cane.

I either use a Maxpedition Kodiak or a LA PoliceGear 72 Hour Pack. So, yes to the molle. I just need something to keep it out of the way and secure. It would also see daily use when I ride my motorcycle. (I've been using a Shotgun scabbard, which is okay, but I would prefer something smaller.)

Try a pool cue case. That's what I used for my fighting cane when I was taking martial arts, and I think it would work for your use too. just remove the little divider to keep the cue halves seperate if needed, and you should be good to go. Maybe adding a little shock cord for retention would be a good idea too.
You might have to utilize some duct tape and 550 cord to attach it to your pack though, fair warning.
BONUS- I'm pretty sure the little pouch on the front of most of them for chalk and stuff is big enough for an altoids tin too.

You can get clear polycarbonate tubes in varying lengths and diameters. Drill attachment holes and you are done. I get these at TAP Plastics.

It may not be as secure, but a carabiner (or two) clipped to the MOLLE straps and your cane passed through them would also work.

check the back pack for ski pole holders, most still have them, they just may not be obvious

Check with your local 'Wheelchair and Old Age' Supply stores. I'm sure you can find a dozen listings in any large city. You've probably walked past a few, selling wheel chairs, home hospital beds, portable toilets, etc. These places sell all sorts of clips for holding canes that can be mounted on walkers, wheel chairs, clipped to the cane to support it on the edge of a counter top while paying a cashier at the market. Even your local Walmarts sell them.

You might take a look at the Kifaru Gunbearer. The top strap could probably be adapted for this purpose. Good luck!

You might buy a pack with the side sleeves that are made to hold cross country skis, e.g. LL Bean Continental Rucksack or any of various skateboard packs that have straps on the back to hold the board. In both case you would hang your crook from the top lip of the sleeve or the top strap.
