First thing in the morning.

Clip and pen blade, antique yellow sawcut bone scales.

I am anxious for it to come.

Worth waiting for! A clip is hard to find these days.

Alright I've had enough. What the heck's a Charlow, and do I need one? Some take-off of a Barlow, and from GEC, I get that. But it still feels like I'm on the outside of a really great inside joke.

Barlow as designed by Charlie Campagna, in conjunction with Great Eastern Cutlery, and sold by them as their model #15 Barlow.

"Charlow" is a relatively new colloquialism coined by Thomason as a shortened form of "Charlie's Barlows," the Tidioute Cutlery (TC-stamped-bolster) barlows that Charlie Campagna-- waynorth-- has commissioned as SFOs from GEC.

It all started here, in the "Whatcha got on order?" thread:

Charlies Barlows! What else!?

Me too. Charlows:thumbup::D

There ya go. :)

You're gonna love it. Can't beat a Charlow with a Clip Main (unless maybe you're talkin about a Spearpoint Charlow)!

My Single Clip Charlow is one of my favorite knives.

You are going to love your new knife. I try and make a conscious effort to rotate my knives but as I slip another in my pocket every morning, it always feels like I'm cheating on my charlow as it stares at me from my nightstand.

So Great Eastern makes a Barlow knife called Tom's Choice, some of those were made as SFOs for Charlie Campagna, who is none other than our beloved Waynorth. Wheh. No wonder you guys came up with "Charlow."

So do I need one?

And does Charley, ahem, Waynorth have a website or store where these knives can be purchased?

I have never seen a spearpoint TC Barlow at any dealer... and I'd be interested in one whether I need it or not. :D

Send Charlie an email through the forum.

For the spears and clips you just have to hit refresh several dozen times per day on the traditional sale forum...they pop up very frequently. Just have to be at the right place at the right time.

email sent. Thanks for the tip.

For a while the online dealers only had clip point barlows. Now they mostly have wharncliffes. I must have slept through the spearpoints.

I did manage to score a spearpoint White Owl and a spearpoint Boys Knife and a spearpoint Pony... Come to think of it, the swing guard might be a spear point as well. See, I'm not a total loser. :D

Here is a quote:

"Mary gave him a bran-new "Barlow" knife worth twelve and a half cents; and the convulsion of delight that swept his system shook him to his foundations. True, the knife would not cut anything, but it was a "sure-enough" Barlow, and there was inconceivable grandeur in that . . . "

I wonder. I know that Mark Twain was a good-old raconteur and could tell a real doozie when it suited him, but do you suppose there's some truth in his description of a 19th-century knife coming straight from the factory dull as a butterknife? Maybe it's not such a modern malady after all?! lol
