I am a new user of these remarkable knives, and have currently only had practice on a friend's. After seeing this site, I must have one. The problem is this: I have very little money, and the money I have must be used on education. So, would you kind people, as experience users, buy a Bear, a Jaguar or other. I would prefer, if possible, to keep the price under $50. Thx.

I have not used any other knives than my jaguar... But i am very happy with it... I have heard from other people that they are the best next to BMs... I heard that the handles on Bears brake... Sorry i couldn't help you more, but i recomend a jag-

Well not knowing your location Jaguars would probably be the best route. I personally have a generic taiwan made bali that I bought in China Town in Chicago for $20 that I prefer over the jag (nicer blade and handle). But, if you were in the Philippines, or were visiting in the near future, Id say go to bataangas and get one custom made. I believe WrongFriend posted that his giant Bali only costed him $50 US. My own personal favourite Bali was part of a custom order in Bataangas that a friend of mine had done over a decade ago. It has an extremely good blade (Id estimate the rockwell hardness of the edge to be near 60 from the way a new file feels on it), mirror polished, water buffalo slats, nice file working on the latch, nice polished brass, etc... Geez, I really oughta take some good pics of it one day. But like I said my friend did a custom order of 100 balis for $100 completed in a weeks time.

as stated before, bears have a reputation for broken handles. jags' pins can break after hard usage (i just finished replacing one on mine this afternoon), but a broken pin is much MUCH easier to deal with than a broken handle. so, yeah. i'd say get a jag.

aleX.

Thanks, all. Guess I'll go with the jag, though I've been reading 'bout BM and can't stop thinking about one...oh well, thx for the advice.

If you are in the US, this shop is even cheaper, considering saving up is important for you.
Of course as you might read at Susan's website that Jag quality varies a lot, some shops that are more 'expensive' might have done pre-selection for you .. but that is my guess only.
I know our forumite John at www.balisongknife.com also has it ...
BTW, don't forget telling us your first night with a bali once you get it .. and your first blood (ouch!
