Yesterday I recieved a package in the mail. A blade, but not just any blade.
Here's the story; Weeks ago I asked a friend of mine to forge me a small 4", single edged blade that I could make up into a utility neck/belt knife. Having more than a little field experience, I've found this to be handy size for small chores around camp.
My friend, a blacksmith and member of the American Bladesmith Society, set to work. He forged a blade, but it didn't sing to him. So, he forged another, but it too failed to satisfy him. Finally, he dug out a cherished bar of 5160 steel, given to him more than a decade ago by Bill Moran, and forged a blade most magical. If you hold this razor sharp, zone hardened, forge scale intact, blade in your hand, you know right away there's nothing ordinary about it.
I gave it a handle of African ebony, hard and black as midnight. I'm working on a deep pouch style sheath of vegetable tanned leather for it. When it's finished I'll add it to my essential gear for my upcoming trip to Afghanistan.
Who is this friend? Since we're both into medieval reenactment I only know him as Ragnar of Elandris. He's got a website at www.ragweedforge.com. Sells mostly scandinavian knives and knifemaking materials, but he's got some really nice axes/tomahawks too. Reminds me a lot of Uncle Bill, honest and generous to a fault.
If he asks how you heard of him, tell him Robert of Yorkshire, King's Archer of Ansteorra, sent you (among other things, I'm a passing fair shot with a longbow). Please don't bug him about forging a blade, he did this one by exception. Mine is the first unmounted blade to ever come out of his forge. Of life's true treasures, friends are the most precious.

I'll drink to that! :)
(P.S. Considering the quality of the knives Sarge makes himself, this blade from Ragnar must be magical indeed).

Sarge, Did the guys like the blades or were they too long. There are some folks that just do not like long knives. I'm sure that some one would want them.

I think that I have cured the problem of the neck knife turning so bad. I guess you won't need the KK now anyway, but I sure use the one you gave me all the time. Paper Cutter, Huh.:) :)

Berk: I think the next round's on me if I remember right. Thanks for the complement on my humble knifemaking attempts, I'm just an amatuer, but there are worse hobbies a man could have.

Pappy: Not to worry about the big blades, the boys love 'em. One young pup made a point of calling back to the squadron to get you and Berk's e-mail addresses so he can thank you himself. Haven't been able to get a hold of him, he's off getting married before we head out. In fact, I haven't seen a whole lot of the boys lately, I've been on leave getting my affairs in order. You and Berk should be hearing from them next week. Long blades a problem? Not this camping trip ;-)

That is good. Hope they learn to love them the way us on this forum do.

You know how I feel about their use. If the need arises I hope they tear some dude a brand new a$$.:D

There are some of us that have kept track of rag's work for some time now.

It's very impressive. Plus his website is full of great information and loads of pictures.

Thanks.

Yea; Figure eights would be nice. We need to work on a motorized handle for the khuks to be able to make all those turns.:D
