Yesterday I recieved a package in the mail. A blade, but not just any blade.
Here's the story; Weeks ago I asked a friend of mine to forge me a small 4", single edged blade that I could make up into a utility neck/belt knife. Having more than a little field experience, I've found this to be handy size for small chores around camp.
My friend, a blacksmith and member of the American Bladesmith Society, set to work. He forged a blade, but it didn't sing to him. So, he forged another, but it too failed to satisfy him. Finally, he dug out a cherished bar of 5160 steel, given to him more than a decade ago by Bill Moran, and forged a blade most magical. If you hold this razor sharp, zone hardened, forge scale intact, blade in your hand, you know right away there's nothing ordinary about it.
I gave it a handle of African ebony, hard and black as midnight. I'm working on a deep pouch style sheath of vegetable tanned leather for it. When it's finished I'll add it to my essential gear for my upcoming trip to Afghanistan.
Who is this friend? Since we're both into medieval reenactment I only know him as Ragnar of Elandris. He's got a website at www.ragweedforge.com. Sells mostly scandinavian knives and knifemaking materials, but he's got some really nice axes/tomahawks too. Reminds me a lot of Uncle Bill, honest and generous to a fault.
If he asks how you heard of him, tell him Robert of Yorkshire, King's Archer of Ansteorra, sent you (among other things, I'm a passing fair shot with a longbow). Please don't bug him about forging a blade, he did this one by exception. Mine is the first unmounted blade to ever come out of his forge. Of life's true treasures, friends are the most precious.
